Ben Bernanke’s first term as Federal Reserve chair was marked by a whole bunch of crazy bank failures, financial market distress, bailouts, and pissed-off tea partiers who probably want to hurt him. On the eve of a second confirmation hearing, one independent senator has said “enough.” Bernie Sanders plans to put a hold on Bernanke’s nomination, which means he might be able to filibuster easily. He’s pretty much screwed. source

  • 73-year-old San Francisco widow Marion Cope • Who was mauled by a pack of unleashed dogs who were attacking the dog she was walking. A dog bit her calf, leaving a 10-inch wound which will require plastic surgery to repair. The irony? Her family, which also owned a swanky hotel in the city, gave the park to San Francisco nearly 100 years ago. That bites. source

  • Our circulation sucks. Let’s kill the paper! In a hack and slash maneuver with negative ramifications for tons of journalists, the Times has announced layoffs of 40% of their staff. They also plan to trim the paper back significantly and focus on the right-leaning chatter that has earned the paper a circulation that’s only a fraction of the size of The Washington Post. Is less sports and more crazy the answer? We’ll find out. source
