U.S.: Holy crap: Officials shoot and kill fugitive bear from helicopter

This bear attacked an old guy at Yellowstone, so authorities took to a helicopter and shot it to death. It was the first bear mauling around the park in 25 years. source

U.S.: In San Francisco, unleashed dogs attack rich old ladies. Yikes.

  • In the past few years the park has become a nightmare of unleashed dogs. What is it going to take to enforce the leash law and control access? A death of a child? A badly injured adult? I am a seriously injured adult…
  • 73-year-old San Francisco widow Marion Cope • Who was mauled by a pack of unleashed dogs who were attacking the dog she was walking. A dog bit her calf, leaving a 10-inch wound which will require plastic surgery to repair. The irony? Her family, which also owned a swanky hotel in the city, gave the park to San Francisco nearly 100 years ago. That bites. source

World: For shame, murderous Russian bear on ice skates. For shame.

  • Maybe “Bears on Ice” wasn’t such a great idea. A Russian circus troupe is in mourning today after a bear who was supposed to be on ice skates killed circus administrator Dmitry Potapov and mauled an animal trainer. OK, we know. Russia has a long history of putting bears in the circus, but we think even we’d draw the line at ice skates. Screw the Ice Capades. source

Offbeat: OK, this chimpanzee story is really weird.

  • A 200-pound pet chimpanzee in Stamford, Conn., Monday viciously mauled a woman he had known for years, leaving her critically injured with much of her face torn away, the authorities said.
  • Andy Newman • Reporter for The New York Times, in the lede for the story he wrote today. The chimp was shot dead, by the way, and, well … we don’t have anything else to say. • source
