U.S.: How various states failed at keeping Maurice Clemmons jailed

  • Arkansas The parole board recommended to Mike Huckabee that Clemmons fit the profile for early release, so he released him, in part due to the fact that Clemmons was jailed at 17.
  • Washington Clemmons moved to the state after getting off on robbery charges in Arkansas, and was released on bond for child-rape charges just six days ago. source

U.S.: The likely coffee shop killer suspect: Shot, probably dead

  • His home was surrounded by police. Authorities are reporting this morning that they, at minimum, shot Maurice Clemmons, and at most killed him. Officers surrounded Clemmons’ home in Seattle this morning. He hasn’t been named as a formal suspect. source

  • Yeah, that’s him Family Guy recently had a pretty spot-on parody of Chris Matthews recently, noting both his forehead and the way that he never lets people finish. Hilarious. (On a side note – NewsPolitics is no longer on YouTube, and are now hosted by Mediaite. That’s great, but: Dear Mediaite, fix your messy embed codes!)
  • She’s been there On “Fox News Sunday,” former Bush press secretary Dana Perino talked about her experiences with public events and how something like the gate-crashing incident could’ve happened. Ultimately, the main point she makes is that Obama wanted to lighten up White House security, but he really can’t do that.
  • A ticking time bombRecently, Glenn Beck made a reference to Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu being a hooker for supporting the health care bill after multiple concessions for her state. Fellow radio host Bill Press says that Fox News – beyond showing hypocrisy for letting Beck be sexist – is setting themselves up for a huge, public Glenn Beck blow-up.

U.S.: Ex-police chief on Washington coffee shop slaying: I’m heartbroken

  • I’m horrified. I just can’t believe the news. I’m the old guy around there, and I kind of feel like they’re my sons and daughters. They clearly are the very best Washington has to offer. I’m heartbroken over this.
  • Former Lakewood, Wash. Police Chief Larry Saunders • Describing his feelings about the calculated shootings of four police officers he used to supervise. The officers were killed in a coffee shop while using laptops, and despite the fact that there were other people in the shop, they were the only ones targeted. The “person of interest” is currently on the run. source

World: Iran to the rest of the world: Screw you guys, you suck.

  • Iran has officially moved from “double dare” to “triple dog dare.” With the class of a unlikeable bully on the playground, Iran announced today that they planned to open up 10 new enrichment plants. Iran was responding to a demand by the UN that they stop enriching at Fordow, the site that was only disclosed recently. FYI: Iran responds, guns blazing, both middle fingers in the air. source
