U.S., World: The Smoking Gun lays the smack down on a prank-call network

  • What is Pranknet? The until-now anonymous network, led by Windsor, Ontario resident Tariq Malik, has been a loose collective of shut-ins, some with criminal records, using Skype and chat networks to commit a campaign of terror on chain businesses – largely restaurants and hotels – around the U.S. source
  • The crimes In one case, they caused hotel employees to destroy sprinkler systems, causing $50,000 in damages. In another, they convinced a hotel employee to drink a patron’s urine. Most infamously, they convinced KFC employees to go outside, strip naked and urinate on each other.
  • Take cues from TSG The mainstream media could learn a lot from The Smoking Gun – which is owned by Time Warner, by the way. Here’s an organization that posts funny mugshots, sure, but then posts these killer investigative pieces full of finished homework that lots of people read. Newspapers, take note. source

Culture: We saw this Paula Abdul “Idol” story last night, but we didn’t care

  • What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me.
  • “American Idol” judge Paula Abdul • On her Twitter account last night, revealing to the world that she was leaving American Idol. As her banter between Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson has been downright essential to the show’s success, fans are obviously freaking out over this news. Music: Transgendered musician Antony worked hard for his fame

  • I know that sounds ridiculous, but I have to keep that garden alive. I see myself as a microcosm – that’s the word – as one example of humanity and of the brokenness of humanity. I’m interested in exploring that on a very personal level in that it might be useful for my own attempt to evolve.
  • Antony Hegarty, the transgendered mastermind of Antony and the Johnsons • Discussing what he feels he does with his music. As you might imagine from a large-framed transgendered man with a voice akin to Nina Simone, he has an interesting life story, most of it taking place in New York. But a few lucky shakes, particularly from Lou Reed and Devendra Banhart, gave Antony eventual breakout success. Recently, his subject matter has turned from gender identity to pure optimism, optimism which peppers his most recent album, “The Crying Light.” This Pitchfork feature on the singer is a pretty killer read. • source

Sports: Arena Football is screwed. Not even Bon Jovi could save it.

A Kansas City Brigade game in 2007
  • Remember when you were really excited about arena football? Like, really, really excited? Neither do we. Which is why the league’s end is about as disappointing as a Bon Jovi concert. (Clarification: Bon Jovi concerts aren’t disappointing, but they aren’t awesome either. And Jon Bon Jovi owned the Philadelphia Soul, the defending champs.)source
