Offbeat, U.S.: A Special Olympian just dared Obama. It’s on now!

  • He bowled a 129. I bowl a 300. I could beat that score easily.
  • Kolan McConiughey • One of the top Special Olympian bowlers in the world. Dude’s bowled five perfect games since 2005, which totally puts Obama (and most of the rest of us) to shame. Obama’s first major verbal slip-up of his presidency doesn’t even make sense when talking about this dude. • source

Tech: Tomorrow, we’re gonna try to save newspapers at Revenue 2.0

  • What it’s about Revenue 2.0 is a workshop and think-tank which will attempt, among other things, to figure out new outside-the-box ways for newspapers to make money through advertising. It’s being headed by current D.C.-ite Matt Mansfield, president of Society for News Design, and newspaper consultant Alan Jacobson.
  • Playing with ideas The ideas being considered include ways to advertise to iPhones, building a better Craigslist (we like our friend Eston Bond’s attempt, iList), and improving the basic layout of display advertising online (beyond these super-prevalent Apple ads). We’ll try to brainstorm, bash heads and prototype the results. It should be cool.
  • Why we’re goingA few reasons. First off, we’re really curious and have some ideas. Working on ShortFormBlog (and at Express, and previously Link) has inspired us to look beyond the obvious. Secondly, we think there’s value in these kind of discussions. As Clay Shirky says, everything might work. Finally, it’s in D.C., which means it’s local! source

  • -5.2 billion fewer pieces of mail got shipped last quarter from the same period a year ago. Officials say it could get worse; layoffs are in the works. source

Music: So, why did VH1 take “Behind the Music” off the air, anyway?

  • It felt like the time is right. There’s all sorts of new artists on the scene who have emerged and have these great stories. And there’s other artists that we always wanted to do the first time around.
  • Jeff Olde • VH1 executive VP of Original Programming, on the return of everyone’s favorite way to laze around on the couch on a Saturday afternoon. That’s right, the ultimate rock-documentary series “Behind the Music” is coming back, fresh with new shows on Scott Weiland and Lil Wayne, among others. • source

Offbeat: What’s a fart between a classroom of friends? A suspension.

  • A kid got booted from school for passing gas. The Lakeland County, Florida teen did it intentionally and repeatedly to amuse his classmates, but it was no laughing matter to the school, who suspended the kid under a rule against disruptive behavior (which they stretched out to gastrointensively disruptive behavior in this case). The kid’s dad says the district went too far and is appealing the decision. His argument? “Pull my finger,” of course! source
