World: A good way to anger a bunch of Quebecers: call them illiterate

  • Whether in elementary or secondary [school], English is practically swept under the rug [in Quebec]. At the university level, it’s even worse. We have illiterates of the second language.
  • Daniel Petit • A Canadian member of parliament, at a meeting of the House of Commons official languages committee. See, this was just bad form. Criticize them for other reasons that they can’t really get angry about, like liking poutine. Calling them illiterate is just going to get you in trouble, dude. In fact, Petit’s statements completely contradict studies which note that Francophones are adept with both English and French. • source

  • Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke • On the recession and the biggest problem – the clogged up credit and financial markets. Sports: The Broncos messed with Jay Cutler too much. Now he wants out.

  • He asked for a trade. The Denver QB was upset by a number of things, including the way that the team took a good long look at current Chiefs QB Matt Cassel when he got traded from the Patriots, despite the fact that Cutler is arguably better. But the kicker was a meeting that went poorly with coach Josh McDaniels. “So, I get it, really, it’s a business,” Cutler said. “I’m disappointed beause I love being a Bronco but I think it’s run its course.” source

U.S.: Three female teachers have sex with female students? It’s a fluke!

  • You probably noticed that several teachers have been arrested on these types of charges lately. But teachers are no more likely than doctors, lawyers or newspaper reporters to commit these crimes. Sex crimes affect a wide cross-section of demographics. I think it’s just a fluke.
  • Santa Clara County, Calif. Supervising Deputy District Attorney Mike Fletcher • On the string of inappropriate relationships between female high school teachers and female students in the area. Personally, we think there’s something in the water in Santa Clara County. • source
