Tech: Fake Steve’s worried about an anti-Snow Leopard NYT article

  • The Borg won’t comment on the record, but they’ll definitely put some folks on the phone who will chortle on background and point out all the ‘problems’ with Snowy.
  • Fake Steve Jobs • On the possibility of an anti-Snow Leopard article in The New York Times, after David Pogue gushed about it, then admitted that he had a lot of problems with things breaking. According to Fake Steve, “the guys on the news side at the Times are ashamed of Pogue and embarrassed by him.” So are we, Fake Steve. So are we. • source

Offbeat: “Corrupt official” is rising up the “when I grow up” charts

  • When I grow up I want to be an official. … A corrupt official because corrupt officials have a lot of things.
  • A young Chinese girl interviewed on TV • When asked what she planned to do when she grew up. You know, young anonymous Chinese girl, you could get more specific with your “when I grow up” statement and simply say you want to be a corrupt blogger. ShortFormBlog will probably be hiring in 20 years. • source

Offbeat: Conspiracy theorist convinces newspaper The Onion’s story was real

  • We thought it was true so we printed it without checking. … We didn’t know the Onion was not a real news site.
  • The Daily Manab Zamin associate editor Hasanuzzuman Khan • Describing the thought process that led to his Bangladesh-based paper printing the false-on-its-face story “Conspiracy Theorist Convinces Neil Armstrong Moon Landing Was Faked,” which the Onion put online earlier this week. Total feather-in-cap situation for The Onion, we’re sure. • source

Politics: Someone’s spreading vicious Glenn Beck rumors with domain names

  • Notice: This site is parody/satire. We assume Glenn Beck did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990, although we haven’t yet seen proof that he didn’t. But we think Glenn Beck definitely uses tactics like this to spread lies and information.
  • A note at the bottom of GlennBeckRapedAndMurderedAYoungGirlIn1990.com (that’s a mouthful) • A site designed to spread vicious rumors and lies about everyone’s favorite unintentional comedian. We’re not sure if we particularly like the idea of this site, but we do find it interesting as all get-out. What a bizarre freaking name for a Web site. (Update: It’s inspired by this.) We just like saying it because it’s so over-the-top. • source

Sports: Three examples of awkward Caster Semenya press coverage

  • From this NYT article: “Medical experts said assigning sex was hardly as easy as sizing someone up visually. Even rigorous examinations can result in ambiguous findings.”
  • From an L.A. Times article: “An Italian rival, Elisa Cusma Piccione, called her a man. Russian runner Mariya Savinova agreed. ‘Just look at her,’ she told journalists in Berlin.”
  • The BBC notes that what’s down there isn’t enough for the judges: “They will look at her external genitalia, but they will also look at hormone levels and her chromosomal make-up.”
