Politics: Craigslist dude Craig Newmark incredibly pissed CNN ambushed him

  • If Amber had done her homework, she would have known ambushing me with questions I am not qualified to answer, or even the right person to ask, would not get CNN’s viewers the accurate information they deserve.
  • Craigslist founder Craig Newmark • Regarding getting ambushed about his service by CNN reporter Amber Lyon for a report about sex trafficking, and then folding under pressure. Newmark’s silence in the report, which ran a month ago, was deafening, without any fair explanation why he might struggle answering these questions. Simple answer: Uh, he’s not the CEO and works a menial customer service job with his own service. This is intentional, because he’s a terrible manager. Good thing, as a writer, he does a very good job explaining himself and why Lyon’s attack was all wrong. Do your homework before you ambush. source

U.S.: Philip Markoff’s suicide took closure away from victim’s family

  • Their grief for Jullissa is as fresh today as the day over a year ago when Markoff took Julissa away from them. The long-awaited criminal prosecution was their only opportunity to confront him, and now he has taken that away as well.
  • Lawyer Djuna Perkins • Discussing suspected Craigslist Killer Philip Markoff’s prison suicide today. Perkins, the lawyer for Julissa Brisman’s family, emphasized that her clients were “shocked and dismayed by the news.” It was a long way down for Markoff, a medical school student who was about to get married before he reportedly started attacking massage therapists that he met on Craigslist and got arrested, presumably with a life sentence in the cards. Crazy situation for sure. source

U.S.: Vacation rentals in NYC no longer on the table thanks to new law

  • Craigslist entrepreneurs in NYC: Sorry. After saying he would veto the law, New York Governor David Paterson passed a law banning short-term vacation rentals in the city, forcing people to go to licensed hotels instead. If you go to Craigslist, you’ll see quite the cottage industry exists for this kind of housing. NYC mayor and noted iPad fanatic Michael Bloomberg supported the measure: “When housing designated for permanent occupancy is illegally converted into a hotel, unsafe conditions are created, the residential character of City neighborhoods is harmed and the supply of much-needed units of housing is depleted,” he said. Or, more likely, this cottage industry bloomed because hotels in NYC are super-expensive and out of whack with the rest of the country. source

U.S.: Craigslist’s rep damaged again after a deadly home robbery

  • You hate to tell people to be wary of your fellow citizens, but the reality is you’ve got to be wary when you are doing something when interacting with strangers on Craigslist. This is a cautionary tale.
  • Pierce County, Wash. Prosecutor Mark Lindquist • Regarding an April 28 incident where a bunch of thieves found a diamond ring ad on Craigslist, and then proceeded to rob the home. The thieves came to the home, posed as a couple, then, once inside, pulled out a gun and held the family hostage. Two more assailants joined them. They handcuffed the family of four, pistol-whipped the 14-year-old, beat the mother, and when the father tried to defend his son, he was shot three times. The four suspects have been caught, but holy crap. Keep this in time next time you sell stuff (especially expensive stuff), guys. source

Biz, U.S.: Craigslist profits from sex ads, attorney generals notice

  • first States complain because
    Craigslist allows anyone
    to post sexually-oriented
    ads which can be used
    for illegal prostitution.
  • second In an effort to appease
    the states, Craigslist
    charges for the section
    for purposes of creating
    a paper trail.
  • third A group of 39 states,
    noticing the profits made
    from the for-pay section,

Biz: Craigslist’s “Adult Services” controversial, makes lots of money

  • $122
    million
expected revenues for the no-frills classified site in 2010 alone; at least 70 percent of that is pure profit (and mostly from employment ads)
  • $39
    million
    in revenue will come from
the controversial for-pay “Adult Services” section, made in the wake of the Craigslist Killer source
  • » Printing their own money: The site has a small staff for what it is, but despite that, it’s a total gold mine. For every employee Craigslist has (around 30), the company makes $4 million in revenue and at least $2.9 million in profit, a level so high you simply won’t find it anywhere else in the industry. We wish we made $3 million in profits per employee.

Offbeat: Man jokingly puts kids on Craiglist; police don’t get the joke

  • Joshua Stagnitto must be regretting his sense of humor. The Brockport, N.Y. resident, 24, put his two children up on Craigslist as a joke. Unfortunately for him, someone who saw the posting called child protective services, which turned the case into something of a criminal nature. He could face a $1,000 fine or a year in jail. This is despite the fact that, well, the kids are staying with their mom and aren’t in any danger of getting taken away. source

U.S.: Craigslist pimp: “Prostitute yourself or your daughter gets it”

  • What a jerk this guy apparently was. A Minnesota man living in Illinois was arrested over the weekend felony pandering (a.k.a. pimping) charges. Clinton Danner was arrested for the crime after his wife went to authorities to complain about the racket. According to authorities, Danner prostituted her out in eight states, took the money himself, and reportedly threatened bodily harm on her daughter if she didn’t comply. Yikes. Sounds scary. By the way, this guy was caught in Cook County, Illinois. The sheriff of that jurisdiction, Tom Dart, is a pretty huge critic of the site’s adult sections. source

Culture: Conan on Craigslist’s Casual Encounters: “Drapes Match the Carpet”

Conan’s brilliant reaction to “The Tonight Show” controversy got a whole lot more brilliant, thanks to Craigslist. Too bad some jerk flagged the post. source

Culture: Craigslist hero: Conan’s funnier than crochety old man

  • Again, it’s certainly looking like Conan has the emotional upperhand, even as his show goes down the tubes thanks to NBC. While NBC Sports executive Dick Ebersol (who, as proven by his stay on SNL, wouldn’t know funny if it hit him in the face) savaged Conan in a New York Times article, saying “what this is really all about is an astounding failure by Conan,” Conan put his show up on Craigslist – a joke funnier than anything Jay Leno has come up with in about a decade. We hope Comcast fires Ebersol and Jeff Zucker, execution-style. source
