U.S.: Philip Markoff’s suicide took closure away from victim’s family

  • Their grief for Jullissa is as fresh today as the day over a year ago when Markoff took Julissa away from them. The long-awaited criminal prosecution was their only opportunity to confront him, and now he has taken that away as well.
  • Lawyer Djuna Perkins • Discussing suspected Craigslist Killer Philip Markoff’s prison suicide today. Perkins, the lawyer for Julissa Brisman’s family, emphasized that her clients were “shocked and dismayed by the news.” It was a long way down for Markoff, a medical school student who was about to get married before he reportedly started attacking massage therapists that he met on Craigslist and got arrested, presumably with a life sentence in the cards. Crazy situation for sure. source

U.S.: How’d they catch the Craigslist killer? Through his e-mails.

  • The first thing you start with is the email address. In this case, it’s an email address from Live.com, which is Microsoft. … A trace route does exactly what it says: traces the route that the email took, on its way from its origin, to its destination.
  • Secure IT Experts internet forensics expert Mark Rasch • Describing the process used to link Philip Markoff to the Craigslist murders. Rasch, a former head of the computer crimes unit at the U.S. Department of Justice, says that this narrowed it down to Markoff’s IP address, which led to his apartment building. From there, it was a matter of a more traditional stakeout. “They have to validate and actually get this guy’s fingers on the keyboard, and show that it was him, and not somebody else who sent that email.” Know what that means? It means you should probably avoid committing crimes on computers, because they can be traced. • source

Biz, U.S.: Let’s pour a 40 for the Craiglist “Erotic Services” section

  • It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday’s erotic massages. After much prodding from attorney generals across the country, not to mention the terrible PR of a guy labeled the “Craiglist killer” killing massage therapists all over the Boston metro area, Craigslist is finally getting rid of one of their most, uh, popular sections, the “Erotic Services” section. It’ll be replaced with a moderated adult category which we’re sure is going to put massage therapists working out of sketchy hotel rooms out of work. source

U.S.: “Craigslist killer” Phil Markoff’s friends give him the benefit of the doubt

  • By merely joining this group, you have all shown the restraint and intelligence necessary to not jump to conclusions and be able to read news stories with a fair eye.
  • A message from the Facebook group “Phil Markoff is Innocent Until Proven Guilty” • The group, currently 218 members strong, is getting outsized media coverage considering its size. Despite this, police note that the case is fairly open-and-shut, as the murder weapon was found in Markoff’s apartment. • source

U.S.: The apparent “Craigslist killer” has a history that goes back a bit

  • In a doorway, he pushed me up against the wall and tried kissing me. I was trying to push him away, saying, ‘No Phil, get off me.’
  • Morgan Houston • A classmate of Phillip Markoff at State Univeristy of New York-Albany, where she said Markoff attempted to attack her four years ago. It was a close call, and she was saved by a friend. She said it was the only time Markoff attacked her. It appears that Markoff’s motive behind the current attacks, by the way, was to pay off gambling debts. • source

U.S.: One of the Craiglist killer’s victims survived by “not fighting back”

  • I just complied with everything he wanted me to do. I didn’t resist him in any way and that’s why.
  • Trisha Leffler • One of the Craigslist killer’s apparent victims. She was bound and robbed of $800. She claims that she recognized Philip Markoff, the man accused of the attacks, from the surveillance stills released by police prior to his arrest. • source

U.S.: “Craigslist killer” so unexpected, his fiancée is in blind denial

  • Unfortunately, you were given wrong information as was the public. All I have to say to you is Philip is a beautiful person inside and out and could not hurt a fly!
  • Megan McAllister • Fiancée of Philip Markoff, the Boston University grad student accused of being the “Craigslist killer.” Apparently, his reputation was such that nobody expected anything like this from him among his friends and family. Markoff and McAllister were supposed to get married on the Jersey Shore in August. That won’t be happening, most likely; he’s in jail without bail. • source

U.S.: Total creepbag with the nickname “Craigslist killer” in custody

  • He visited a massage therapist, then apparently killed her. Phil Markoff, 22, a Boston University student, was arrested yesterday during a traffic stop. Markoff is accused of murdering a masseuse who advertised her services on Craigslist, as well as robbing another woman who did the same. Regarding the medical student’s arrest, police commissioner Ed Davis said, “We are very, very happy to have this man off the street in such a timely way.” source
