Tech, World: The Pirate Bay lost their spectrial, but they’re not ready to give up

  • We see this as a film. This is the first set-back for the heroes. … In the end we know that the good guys will win, as in all movies.
  • Peter Sunde • One of the defendants in the spectrial in Sweden. A guilty verdict was brought down today, but there still seems to be plenty of swagger in the steps of The Pirate Bay’s owners, who plan to appeal. The site is still up, by the way. • source

Biz, Politics, Tech: Huffington: Consumer habits have changed, AP.

  • Consumer habits have changed dramatically. People have gotten used to getting the news they want, when they want it, how they want it, and where they want it. And this change is here to stay.
  • Arianna Huffington • Talking about newspapers, the media and her role in the whole mess with The Huffington Post. She was on Charlie Rose this week debating the topic with Tom Curley of the Associated Press and said some really insightful things. Huffington knows what she’s talking about. • source

Culture: Good job, “Wolverine” pirates! You made Hugh Jackman really sad!

  • It’s a serious crime and there’s no doubt it’s very disappointing – I was heartbroken by it. Obviously people are seeing an unfinished film. It’s like a Ferrari without a paint job.
  • Hugh Jackman • Talking about the leak of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” that happened last week. At least one head already rolled after the incident. • source

Biz, Politics: Dear Associated Press: You’re not the only game in town

  • The dispute The Associated Press, one of the most-quoted and most-highly-regarded wire services, wants to battle Web sites who use their content – even under commentary and fair use standards – head-on. “We can no longer stand by and watch others walk off with our work under some very misguided, unfounded legal theories,” said AP chair Dean Singleton, who we cited directly from an insightful AP article on the topic. source

  • Our suggestion The wire service currently is still debating how to do this, but here’s how we think they should handle it. They should set up a satellite, AP-1, put it into orbit, implant mind chips into their audience and whenever someone even thinks about reading a newspaper article anywhere besides a newspaper, they’ll get a small, corrective electric shock. Sound idiotic, malformed and unrealistic? That’s because it is, just like this stupid idea. source

  • We’ll just use Reuters If this crazy idea that a bunch of out-of-touch newspaper publishers conjured up gains legs, it’s OK. There are lots of other places to gather content. And to blame this on blogs and Google News, this is beyond unwise; you could speed up the very road to irrelevancy that you’re trying to prevent with a move like this. Only people who don’t understand the Internet would suggest this idea. Good job screwing it up, old guys. source

Tech: The Pirate Bay makes stealing copyrighted stuff even easier!

  • Facebook + Torrents = Lawsuit waiting to happen. Not that you couldn’t search for stuff on The Pirate Bay easily before, but the Swedish dudes who like tweaking authority have made it even easier, by allowing you to share torrent links on your Facebook profile. If you click the link in Facebook, you download the torrent directly. If only buying software was this easy. source

Tech: Electronic Arts learns from its DRM mistakes of “Spore” past

  • The Sims 3? No DRM. Just a serial code. Back in the dark ages of last year, this hotly anticipated game called “Spore” came out. Somehow, it managed to get completely overshadowed by its digital rights management scheme, which was particularly invasive and seemed to take ownership away from fans. Well, Electronic Arts has apparently learned its lesson; “The Sims 3,” out later this year, will not use any DRM at all beyond a serial code. Someone got burned. source

Tech, World: The Pirate Bay spectrial in Sweden nears its end

  • You’ve given us good memories, guys. Between the scenes, the partying and the defense of what you’re doing, you have proven that, yes, copyright trials can be entertaining. And no matter what happens next, we’ll remember this spectrial as the most special couple of weeks our our lives. Good luck, guys. We hope you get a torrent of love. source

Tech, World: Pirate Bay dude: I had to get AFK to get on the stand

  • We do not use that expression. Everything is in real life. We use AFK—Away From Keyboard.
  • Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi • When asked by the prosecution during the Pirate Bay spectrial about when he met someone IRL. How often does this happen in a courtroom? It should happen more often, and totally straight-faced, too. • source
