World: An Afghan airstrike leads top German minister Franz Josef Jung to resign

  • He’s the third top official to resign this week. Jung and others were under pressure after a September attack in Afghanistan killed civilians. It came out in local newspaper Bild that Jung and others likely knew of the civilian casualties from the point it happened. Those who resigned all assumed responsibility for the attacks. source

Politics: Expert: The University of East Anglia blew the e-mail smear campaign

  • The UEA response has been frankly pathetic. It was informed by Real Climate of the hack on 17 November but only reacted two days later when journalists caught on to the story. It refused to confirm whether the emails were accurate or not and, for a long time, refused to comment at all.
  • Climate Outreach and Information Network founder George Marshall • Discussing the University of East Anglia’s weak response to the hacked e-mail controversy despite the fact that the e-mails don’t reveal any sort of conspiracy. He argues instead that it’s merely been integrated into longstanding skeptic opinions. “The speed with which the emails have been cut apart and fed into existing storylines is remarkable,” he notes. He also notes the timing is extremely suspect. source

Culture: David Letterman is still feeling the effects from the sex scandal

  • I’ll be honest with you folks. Right now, I would give anything to be hiking on the Appalachian Trail. I get in the car this morning and the navigation lady wasn’t speaking to me. Ouch.
  • David Letterman • Speaking out on Monday’s show in response to his admission on Thursday that he slept with staffers. He initially didn’t want to bring it up again, but it’s still heavy on the news cycle. So he’s talking about it again. Perhaps the most painful thing thing about the controversy might be dealing with his wife Regina, who he didn’t mention in Thursday’s monologue at all: “”She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it.” Dude’s got a crappy next few months ahead of him. • source

Politics: Mrs. Paterson to Obama: Don’t #(^@ with my governor hubby!

  • David’s the first African-American governor in the state of New York and he’s being asked to get out of the race. It’s very unusual and it seems very unfair.
  • Michelle Paterson • On the controversy surrounding her husband, New York Governor David Paterson, who the Obama administration recently asked to leave the race. Going further, Paterson says: “I think he was stunned. Like I said this is very unusual.” Well, Obama … he’s not leaving the race. • source

Sports, World: South Africa’s athletics chief feels heat for lying about Caster

  • Leonard Chuene’s in the doghouse, just like David Paterson. The country’s sports minister admitted yesterday that he knew that Caster Semenya had a gender test, but let her run anyway. He had previously denied this. Now people in the country are fuming. “Mr Chuene has not only lied to us as the ministry,” said Deputy Sports Minister Gert Oosthuizen, “but to the whole country, and this is not acceptable.” Man. Sucks to be grossly incompetent today, doesn’t it? source

U.S.: Protip from Van Jones: Don’t call Republicans names

  • He got caught calling Republicans #(&^@(^@. Now he’s gone. Van Jones, a White House adviser on environmental issues, had both his radical past (he used to be a Marxist) and name-calling history (see the video) catch up with him in recent weeks. The result? The man is out of a job. It’s telling, by the way, that he was a constant target of Glenn Beck – it’s proof that Beck actually has significant influence. source

Biz, Tech: AT&T: Don’t blame us for Google Voice. Blame Apple.

  • AT&T does not manage or approve applications for the App Store. We have received the letter and will, of course, respond to it.
  • AT&T • In a statement to Mashable regarding the controversy circling the Google Voice iPhone app. While AT&T themselves may not have forced the hand of Apple, agreements put in place may have directly influenced it.  • source
