Politics: Gingrich robocall says Romney forced Holocaust survivors to eat non-kosher

  • A heavy slur, sloppily made: The Gingrich campaign has, in an effort to both court and inflame Florida’s large Jewish population, made a startling accusation. As you can hear above, a robocall claims Romney vetoed a bill to fund kosher food in Massachusetts nursing homes, which meant that Holocaust survivors were, “for the first time,” forced to eat non-kosher. In reality, Romney did veto a bill providing additional funds, but it never took effect (overruled by the state legislature), nor would it have forced anyone to eat non-kosher; it maintained present funding levels, and nursing homes without kosher kitchens would offset with other sources of kosher cuisine, saving nearly $600,000. Assuming the true context of this tactic is widely realized, we guess this won’t endear Newt to the Jewish community. Or anybody else. source

World: “An important document”: What a letter from Hitler (circa 1919) looks like

  • The Museum of Tolerance to put Hitler’s letter on display: Written before his “Mein Kampf” manifesto, the letter mentions the “Jewish threat.” Deborah Lipstadt, a professor at Emory University, said that this letter is “important for helping us understand Adolf Hitler.”  source

World: Did vandals set it free? Infamous Auschwitz sign stolen

  • This sign is infamous. It says “arbeit macht frei,” or “work sets you free.” It’s hung up over the Auschwitz memorial. Well, it was until someone stole it in the middle of the night last night. Who did it? Holocaust deniers? Neo-Nazis? A couple of stupid kids looking to cause some trouble? People who hate being reminded of what happened in Auschwitz? Either way, this sign needs to be returned. (Photo by Flickr user Pawel Sawicki) source

World: The world’s biggest Holocaust denier, Ahmadinejad, denies it again

Dude. Do you think the Holocaust happened in some movie studio or something? Film technology wasn’t that good in 1945. It happened. It was awful. source

U.S., World: John Demjanjuk, the suspected Nazi guard, got charged today

  • He was deported from the U.S. to Germany in May. Demjanjuk was charged with being an accessory to 27,900 murders during the Holocaust by the German government. After spending years with a is-he-or-isn’t-he rep, he was suspected of being “Ivan the Terrible” and convicted in Israel in 1986, only to have that charge overturned. But the claims against the Russian-born Demjanjuk – who has been stripped of U.S. citizenship twice over the allegations – continued to follow him, and the 89-year-old will face trial for his suspected crimes. source

Biz: Elie Wiesel: Not a big Bernard Madoff fan

  • ‘Sociopath,’ ‘psychopath,’ it means there is a sickness, a pathology. This man knew what he was doing. I would simply call him thief, scoundrel, criminal.
  • Elie Wiesel • Talking about Bernard Madoff, who made off with $15 million from Wiesel’s charity organization as part of the $50 billion he stole from investors. Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize-winning writer, says Madoff should be held in solitary confinement with pictures of his victims constantly showing on a screen. • source
