Tech: We’re super thankful for this massive Internet-allowing machine

  • This may be one of the most beautiful machine we’ve ever seen. It’s massive, it’s ugly, but its creation allowed the Internet to flow freely. It’s a packet switcher – nowadays your tiny little Linksys router does way more than this, but God, it’s beautiful. Above, our boy Leonard Kleinrock gives us a tour of its guts. source

Tech: TechCrunch better launch the CrunchPad soon or something

crunchpad1115
  • It’s a pretty damn good idea, but if TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington can’t get this thing out the door before his competition (which may or may not include Apple), it might be for naught. The CrunchPad is reportedly near completion and hovering between the $300-$400 price range, which isn’t a bad price. source

Tech: If you see a PC-hawking BlueHippo headed your way, run away fast

bluehippo1114
  • The hippo is cute, but the company’s a scam. You’ve probably seen the infomercials for BlueHippo on late-night TV, offering to finance your computer on layaway if you’re broke. Well, the FTC did, too, and they suspected it was a scam, something the company proved in years of dealings. After a court case last year, the company only got more brazen, only shipping one computer out of the 35,000 ordered. And that one was apparently by accident. When the FTC declares a company a “money pit,” stay away. source

Tech: Would you buy a “mini laptop” from Nokia? Now you have your chance

Nokia Booklet 3G
  • Not really a Netbook, not really a full-fledged laptop, Nokia’s 10.1″ attempt to stretch beyond mobile phones, the Booklet 3G, is pretty hawt if you can give yourself a reason to buy a machine that runs Windows 7. source

U.S.: President Barack Obama: Cybertheft victim

  • Cyberspace is real and so are the risks that come with it. I know how it feels to have privacy violated because it has happened to me.
  • President Barack Obama • who revealed today, while launching a new initiative to fight cybercrime that his presidential campaign suffered a break-in by hackers last year, although they did not swipe information from campaign contributors. He also noted that a new cyber czar would be part of the initiative, though he didn’t name names. • source

  • 1998 “Oh crap, nobody’s using the Quake II engine anymore; better switch to Unreal!”
  • 2003 “We swear it’s coming soon, guys! Oh come on Take Two! Give us more money!!!!”
  • 2008 “Ahhhh … another year topping Wired’s Vaporware Awards. Never gets old.”
  • 2009 3D Realms apparently shut its doors and no longer exists. Later, poor Duke. source

Biz: We won’t use the “short circuit” pun with this Circuit City story

  • Oops, we just did. Anyway, their last day is today. The former mega-retailer, once a formidable force in electronics retail, just spent the last month and a half liquidating. They gave themselves until March 31, but finished early. So tonight, the lights go off for the last time on the retailer that wanted to be Best Buy, but wasn’t as good. source
