Biz, Culture: Update: ManCrunch.com’s Super Bowl ad rejected by CBS. WTF?

  • We’re calling hypocrite on CBS. A gay-themed ad was rejected by the same company that approved an anti-abortion ad. They’re claiming credit problems, despite the fact that the company was willing to pay cash and had $40 million in venture capital. Come on. This is politics, clear and simple. And we hope that CBS hears it loudly. By the way, GoDaddy’s latest sexapalooza was also rejected. source

Biz: We wish were were important enough bloggers to topple Ben Stein

  • It’s simply unconscionable for a newspaper of record to employ … someone who is surely making a vast amount of money by luring the unsuspecting into overpaying for a financial product they should under no circumstances buy.
  • Reuters financial blogger Felix Salmon • On Ben Stein, who was double-dipping by being a financial columnist for the New York Times AND doing ads for Freescore.com. Salmon, who at the time of the comments claimed to have no influence, had been trashing on Stein’s column since 2007, but said that the commercial pushed it over the edge. But as a result of Salmon’s criticism, Stein WAS fired from the Times for the commercials. Score one for bloggers who think they have no influence. • source

Tech: Lauren apparently touched a nerve with Apple’s legal department

  • You know why I know they’re working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department.
  • Microsoft COO Kevin Turner • Regarding their ad campaign that made us fall in love with a bespectacled young woman named Lauren. Lauren said a number of anti-Apple things in her commercial, where she looked for a laptop for under $1,000. Describing the phone call, Turner said, “It was the single greatest phone call in history that I’ve ever taken in business.”  • source

Culture, Sports: The gender gap: Who watches the Super Bowl?

  • 45.8 million viewers were over 18 and male in 2008. In case you forget, the Giants/Patriots game was the most-watched Super Bowl in history, with over 97 million eyes glued to the tube.
  • 37.7 million viewers were over 18 and female – a percentage of the viewership that’s increased steadily over the last decade. Surprisingly, though, the advertising doesn’t reflect it, according to AdWeek. source
