U.S.: Cop killer in Oakland didn’t want to go back to prison

  • “A strange one” Lovelle Mixon, who died in the shootout that killed four police officers (the fourth has now died; he is no longer brain-dead) was afraid of going back to jail – a claim which perplexes investigators. They claim he would have only spent six months in jail for violating his parole, at most – a punishment which does not reflect the nature of the outburst. source

  • California’s worst in decades With the death of fourth officer John Hege, the shooting now takes its place as the deadliest attack on California law enforcement in nearly four decades. In the wake of the tragedy, family members came to Mixon’s defense. “I don’t want people to think he’s a monster,” said his sister, Enjoli Mixon. “He’s just not. He’s just not.” source

U.S.: Three female teachers have sex with female students? It’s a fluke!

  • You probably noticed that several teachers have been arrested on these types of charges lately. But teachers are no more likely than doctors, lawyers or newspaper reporters to commit these crimes. Sex crimes affect a wide cross-section of demographics. I think it’s just a fluke.
  • Santa Clara County, Calif. Supervising Deputy District Attorney Mike Fletcher • On the string of inappropriate relationships between female high school teachers and female students in the area. Personally, we think there’s something in the water in Santa Clara County. • source

Tech, U.S.: A lawmaker wants Google Maps to blur out a ton of buildings

  • He cites terrorism. Uh, dude … Joel Anderson, a California assemblyman, recently introduced a bill called AB-255, which would require map programs like Google Maps to blur out buildings such as hospitals, schools, churches and government buildings. You know, dude, if the terrorists really wanted to take us out, they’d just have to aim at the blurry spot now. You’re kind of an idiot, Joel. source

Biz: Customized newspapers in L.A.: Print it yourself!

  • Um, aren’t there RSS feeds that do this? The MediaNews-owned Los Angeles Daily News, that other newspaper in L.A., wants to give you your own specialized news. This would, admittedly, be cool – if it was delivered to your door. But ohhhh no! They want you to print your own news with your own ink, thereby taking away its reason for being. Did someone say CueCat? source
