Tech: Your guitar controller plays games; our guitar controller plays songs.

Seven45 Studios ups the ante for the “Rock Bands” and “Guitar Heroes” of the world with “Power Gig: Rise of the SixString,” which uses a real, live gee-tar. Sweet. source

Tech: Chatroulette’s maker may bring his randomness to the U.S.

  • Russian student Andrey Ternovskiy has reportedly applied for a visa. Could Chatroulette, that random piece of viral Internet goodness, go legit? Word on the street is that Ternovskiy is currently in a tug-of-war between Silicon Valley and his Russian homeland about where he goes to legitimize the service, which has grown from 500 to 1.5 million daily users in just three months (!!). One interesting fact from this ReadWriteWeb story: Google, Microsoft and Facebook alone have a combined market value, $500 billion, that equals a third of Russia’s annual economic output. Holy crap, kids. source

Tech: Best part of the Oscars so far: This freaking awesome iPad ad

  • To us, this year’s Oscars seem completely ho-hum. All the obvious winners are winning. All the obvious losers are losing. Hey, wait a second, that’s new! It’s an iPad ad. And it somehow makes the iPad look awesome again! Nice job, Apple!

Tech: Trending topic recap: Justin Bieber vs. Jonas Brothers vs. Chile

  • We’re convinced that 13-year-old girls are slowly taking over Twitter, based on this chart. Chile was the most popular of the week (though WhatTheTrend would disagree), but Justin Bieber and “Jonas” (which we used to cover both the Jonas Brothers and Joe Jonas’ solo career) were right behind. Twitter should consider expanding trending topics, because they’re slowly becoming less useful.

Tech: Ars Technica: Ad-blockers not a friend to many tech sites

  • Because we are a technology site, we have a very large base of ad blockers. Imagine running a restaurant where 40% of the people who came and ate didn’t pay. In a way, that’s what ad blocking is doing to us.
  • ArsTechnica writer Ken Fisher • About an experiment that his site tried with ad-blocking that appears to have backfired to some degree. Fisher says that while some people white-listed the site, many more complained about it. Apparently, most of their readers are heavy tech users, the very type of people who will turn off ads despite the fact that they pay for the content people read. It’s all the more stark considering it’s something most non-technology companies can’t stop thinking about. source

Tech: Mark Zuckerberg’s dirty laundry from Harvard aired out

  • Someone is already trying to make a dating site. But they made a mistake haha. They asked me to make it for them. So I’m like delaying it so it won’t be ready until after the facebook thing comes out.
  • Mark Zuckerberg (as reported by The Business Insider) • Regarding an awkward situation he found himself in in late 2003 and early 2004, where he was asked to work on a site that competed with the basic idea of Facebook. Evidence obtained by The Business Insider suggests that Zuckerberg essentially stalled so that he would be able to launch Facebook first – which wasn’t so heavy on the dating element as HarvardConnection.com, the other site. Other fun allegations made by the site: Zuckerberg reportedly hacked into e-mail accounts of Harvard Crimson reporters and deactivated accounts on competing site ConnectU. source

Tech: At least one publisher gets how awesome iPad books can be

  • The iPad represents the first real opportunity to create a paid distribution model that will be attractive to consumers. The psychology of payment on tablets is different to the psychology on a PC.
  • Penguin Books CEO John Makinson • Regarding what he sees as the future of books. What’s that future of books? Well, in the case of the children’s books he used as an example, a really fun, educational experience, the kind of thing everyone was hoping for with the iPad when it was first suggested (but Apple forgot to show when announcing it). This looks really awesome, Penguin Books. source

Tech: Apparently, the Microsoft Courier isn’t a prototype. It’s real.

Apple should be shaking in its boots if the Courier is real, because it makes the iPad look completely pedestrian. It also uses the same OS as Windows 7 Series. source
