Tech: The reason Opera Mini was approved for the iPhone? It sucks. Badly.

  • Opera Mini: like VNC-ing from your iPhone to a Motorola Razr with a really fast connection.
  • Panic developer Neven Mrgan • Saying what needed to be said about the browser. It’s a fast, zippy browser, but as Harry McCracken notes, it makes Safari look that much better in comparison. In fact, we’d argue it’s ugly. It also makes ShortFormBlog look like it was built in 1997 by people who hadn’t heard of CSS. If we’d paid for it, we’d want our money back. We still might ask for it, even. source

Tech: High-fives all around for the makers of Opera Mini for the iPhone

  • Hell froze over, boys. Our good friends at Opera, who ballsily submitted a Web browser (i.e. direct competition) to the good folks at Apple for the iPhone App Store, actually got it approved. Which was beyond unexpected based on Apple’s recent track record. Maybe Apple isn’t made of stone after all. Will a mobile version of Firefox be next? source

Adobe finally launched its Creative Suite 5 today, which features (among a myraid list of things which we could spend hours posting) 64-bit support for Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects; Adobe’s BrowserLab Web testing suite; support for many popular CMSes directly within Dreamweaver; and some feature that (heartbreakingly) allows you to save Flash apps as iPhone apps. source

Biz, Tech: Palm-reading: The phone maker’s putting itself up for sale

  • What a sucky ending for a cool comeback story. A year ago, Palm looked like it had realistic potential to take on the iPhone in the market. Now, it’s a completely different story. The Pre is a good phone. WebOS is a good system. But now the company and its dwindling stock price are going up for sale, according to Bloomberg. The company has been burning through $80 million every three months just to keep up with Apple and Google. It’s not sustainable. source

  • When we launched, Twitter was incomplete, so developers rushed to fill those holes, but eventually we’re going to have to build a lot of features in because they should be there. We want to set those expectations.

Tech: The JooJoo costs as much as an iPad, does half as much

  • Bring up YouTube or Hulu clips and they look fine in a small window, but click into the full-screen mode and you’ll get more stalls and sputtering than a health care bill moving through Congress.

Beyond the immense amount of drama around the former TechCrunch-sponsored device, they say it sucks, especially at its $500 price point. The key point to take from the review? “Twice the weight of an iPad with half the usability. … You’re going to charge $500 for this thing with a straight face?” (In Michael Arrington’s defense, he wanted to charge less than half that price, but then Fusion Garage got a little greedy.) source

Tech: So, Tweetie, guess we can call you “Twitter for iPhone” now?

  • That explains the lack of a Tweetie iPad app. Twitter tonight acquired the parent company of Tweetie, which is a big fracking deal, because it means Twitter is getting into the well-saturated Twitter app business – a field that includes Seesmic, EchoFon, TweetDeck, our beloved Twitterific iPad app, and hundreds of others. The meaning of being a Twitter developer might be changing significantly. source
