Guess which congressman said this: “This thing is the bomb. It’s light; it’s portable. It’s accessible information. I love it.” The Blackberry was perhaps the killer device for legislatiors of the last decade, but this decade it’s proving to be the iPad. With laptops still not allowed on the floor, the aluminum and glass love machine is a major hit for some. If it takes off, it could straight-up replace the need for paper in the famously-tree-killing legislative branch. We haven’t heard if Robert Byrd is using one yet, though. Maybe he’s waiting for the second-gen. source
2009 Google launches this crazy product called Wave at their I/O conference. It rides a huge wave of hype (and invites). Then it causes a huge backlash.
2010 The main developer, Lars Rasmussen, says they finally understand what it’s for. “It’s about groups of people adopting Wave,” he says. Oh. source
Now we’ve heard from our users that we have gotten a little bit complex.I think we are going to work on that. We are going to be providing options for users who want simplistic bands of privacy that they can choose from and I think we will see that in the next couple of weeks.
Facebook head of public policy Tim Sparapani • Regarding the site’s fairly complex privacy options. People have been complaining, and now there are tools out there that allow you to easily sort through the options because Facebook made them too complex. With all the other crap going on, they need to do something to ease privacy concerns or they’re screwed. At least they realize it. source
So, why do laptop batteries do this? Cambridge University scientists say the need for quick charging creates “dendrites,” metal fibers that can cause short circuits and, in turn, fires like this one. After watching this video (did you guys see that fireball?), we’re going to hold our laptop tight when we go to bed with it tonight. source
Hotmail is nearly 15 years old. If that number makes you feel old, just think how it makes Microsoft’s free e-mail service feel. So, Microsoft is giving the service a reboot in an attempt to outdo Gmail’s features and become even more dominant. The redesign hits this summer. source
Fox News is off their rocker. They don’t even bother to contact me before publishing nonsense.
Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales • Regarding an article on Fox News’s Web site suggesting that he had lost administrative privileges on his own site after he tried to delete a number of controversial images from the site that could be seen as child pornography. The Fox News article was a follow-up to an earlier piece about a letter now-departed co-founder Larry Sanger sent to the FBI regarding the site’s depictions of child porn, and unfortunately for the site, that one is true (and is a source of great debate amongst editors). source
These machines, with their minimalist design and touchscreen interfaces, can create as many as 104 different flavors of soda. But despite this, they’re actually way better designed than old machines. As anyone who’s ever worked in a fast food restaurant can tell you, traditional fountain soda requires a massive infrastructure of plumbing using boxes of syrup and heavy tanks of carbon. These machines replace those massive boxes of syrup with heavily concentrated inkjet cartridges, a way more eco-friendly solution. They’re going mainstream soon. Whoo. source
