Tech: The guy behind much of EA’s bottom-line, Will Wright, is leaving.

  • But he’ll still be working with them, he says. Wright, the crazy detail-oriented maniac behind such classics as SimCity, The Sims, and Spore, will be leaving to start a new game firm called Stupid Fun Club, which will try to think up new forms of innovative entertainment. Electronic Arts is backing the move both diplomatically and financially. They better; Wright is the guy behind some of their best games. source

Biz, Tech: Google CEO Eric Schmidt thinks newspapers need more innovation

  • Schmidt spoke at the the Newspaper Assn. of America conference yesterday, where he told his audience, “You can architect a structure where innovation is welcome, and where it’s taken advantage of.” (In other words, don’t lay people off!) source
  • Schmidt also told the audience that the AP’s crazy plan to piss off their customers wasn’t going to work. Information doesn’t flow that way, so putting it back into the bottle isn’t going to work. He suggests embracing the aggregation instead. source

Tech: Most computers still use Windows XP, but MS is cutting support

  • Mainstream support of XP ends next week. Microsoft owns a hefty chunk of the PC market, sure, but they own it on a seven-year-old operating system. 63% of all Internet users – not just Windows users, but the overall market – use XP, and it’s still sold with new computers. They’ll still provide security fixes, but bug fixes are done after this week. MS officials say that since the platform is so mature it shouldn’t be a problem, but this still seems kind of sketchy. Meanwhile, Vista cries in the corner, all gussied up for the school dance but without a date. source

Tech: Five differences between the Nintendo DS and DSi

  • The DSi has an SD card slot, in case you want to jam out to your favorite whiny Emo songs while gaming. source
  • There’s multiple cameras on the DSi – both to shoot pics of you and your imaginary buddies. source
  • Like bigger screens? Of course you do! The DSi has two 3.25-inch matte (not glossy) screens. source
  • The DSi now packs the DSi Store, an App Store-style wi-fi download store, which is pretty awesome, kids. source
  • Sadly, there’s no GBA slot, so if you have some old-school games around, you’re screwed. source

Tech: T-Mobile’s riding the Google Android gravy train for all it’s worth

  • A new tablet and home phone could be in the cards. The New York Times is reporting that the mobile carrier is stretching the definition of what Android has so far meant to consumers – a single phone, the G1 – and plans to use Android in a seven-inch tablet PC and a home phone setup. They’re not alone; Samsung, HTC and Motorola, along with a host of smaller carriers, have plans to bring Android-based devices (mostly phones) to market soon. source
