Tech: John Carmack: Working with Apple either “Commander Keen” or “Doom”

  • At the highest level of Apple, in their heart of hearts, they’re not proud of the iPhone being a game machine, they wish it was something else.”
  • id Software co-founder John Carmack • Describing the relationship he’s had with Apple over the years. Carmack in general says it’s been a roller coaster, filled with ups and downs – a situation that hasn’t improved, even with Carmack’s former collaborator, Graeme Devine, working at Apple’s iPhone gaming division. Carmack thinks it’s because Apple genuinely doesn’t like gaming. Too bad. So sad. • source

Tech: Not news: Apple does something stupid with the iPhone app store

politics1109a
  • Are these caricatures offensive? Apple seems to think so. And poor Tom Richmond’s got hundreds of hours worth of hard work wasted thanks to the decision. Richmond, an illustrator, helped design a political app called “Bobble Rep” which shows every member of congress (even poor non-vote-getting Eleanor Holmes Norton!), or 540 (!) in total. And Apple rejected the app because they said Richmond’s drawings could “be considered obscene, pornographic, or defamatory.” And politics isn’t even the issue – the app is non-partisan. Worst decision Apple’s ever made? Maybe.source

Tech: The guys behind @FakeAPStylebook explain their inspiration

  • He had said, ‘I don’t know if I’m sad or relieved that this is not a fake account’ because there are so many joke accounts for celebrities. That’s when the inspiration struck.
  • @FakeAPStylebook cofounder Ken Lowery • On the spark he and cohort Mark Hale had in creating the hilarious Twitter account. Essentially, the duo had seen @APStylebook, the Associated Press’ official Twitter feed for all things random style, and saw an idea ripe for parody. The realization paid big dividends – Lowery and Hale have 20,000 more followers than their source of inspiration and already have a book deal lined up. Does the real AP like it? Well, some reporters do, but they haven’t heard from the AP proper yet.  • source

Tech: Check out blogger tool 2Leep, now with a fresh redesign by us!

2leep1106a

Here's the before: 2Leep.com is a blogger link exchange service used by such well-trafficked blogs as Oddee and The Inquisitr. Despite being around only a handful of months, it's gained a lot of momentum of late and is a great way to find neat, often bizarre articles. Despite its great idea, its design didn't really do the site justice. A total diamond in the rough.

2leep1106b
  • Here’s the after: We offered our services to 2Leep pro bono, because we thought we could help a lot of sites by giving this neat idea a design that matched its ambitions. We’re still working (beware of falling bugs, especially if your browser starts with the letters I and E), but the basic idea behind the layout was to give it a more web-appy feel as well as organize and emphasize the often-bizarre and cloying subjects the site covers. Check it out and please let us know if you see any issues. And keep an eye out for 2Leep links on ShortFormBlog!source
