Offbeat: Google News run by computer with juvenile sense of humor

  • “Jack Meoff” ≠ Jake Tapper. The other day, the poor ABC News political reporter got mis-bylined by the computer-driven service, instead calling Tapper by his real name. The article was about some topic we don’t care about, but the second we realized it got turned into a childish prank, we immediately showed interest. Good show, Google News, getting regular people like us interested in the news. source

Offbeat: University of Utah kids learn the hard way about dirty words

This dirty joke got some student journalists in hot water. After this image was thrown up on Fail Blog, the school HELD THEIR RECORDS. Now they can’t graduate. source

Offbeat: “Will it Shred?”: The poor iPad sucks as a skateboard, just an FYI

  • Oh, the agony. This awesome parody of the “Will It Blend” series of videos takes an iPad and tries to turn it into a skateboard. We bet it would’ve worked better had they turned the thing upside down and skated on the non-glass side.

Offbeat: Puerto Rican shooting victim’s funeral ditches the boring coffin

  • This isn’t a Madame Tussauds wax figure. No, this guy is actually dead, he’s been embalmed, and he’s sitting on a motorcycle (which he was given by his uncle) at his wake. The deceased, David Morales Colón, was recently killed in a shooting at the far-too-sad age of 22. It’s the way he probably wants to be remembered. When we die, we want to be embalmed sitting at a coffee shop, typing on a MacBook. Less fun, but more accurate. (Thanks @putneydm) source

Offbeat: ChatRoulette’s second celebrity: Speed illustrator Paz Bernstein?

  • While Merton was getting all of the attention, talented illustrator Paz Bernstein was hopping on ChatRoulette and drawing people live, on the fly, using a Wacom tablet. The fact that these illos are so well-done in such a short amount of time speaks highly of his abilities. And hey, now that Merton’s kinda faded a bit, maybe you can have a chance to shine, Paz. Oh, check out the dude’s portfolio. It’s pretty good and wide-ranging. source

Offbeat: We don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this video

  • So we just chose to do both. This clip, by the way, is from an episode of A&E’s “Intervention,” so before you crack up too much, keep in mind that these guys really mean what they’re saying. Have you cried much lately? Let one out at this post.

Offbeat: When this Amtrak train goes by, it goes “mooooooooooo”

  • Amtrak’s new train runs on beef. Yes, beef. The travel option of third-to-last resort (it tops Chinatown buses and *shudder* Greyhound buses) has a new line running from Oklahoma City to Forth Worth, and it’s using a type of biodiesel fuel called B20. What’s B20, you ask? 80 percent diesel fuel, 20 percent beef byproducts. Yeah, it’s technically biodiesel, but eww. source

Offbeat: Here’s a 104-year-old video of pre-quake San Francisco

  • Since films were silent back then, we’re guessing you won’t mind the Air soundtrack that comes with and fits the tone of the whole thing pretty well. One think we’ll note about the cityscape here: Nearly all the buildings you see here no longer exist. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake flattened them. Either way, it’s a pretty awesome clip. source
