Culture, Music: South Park, thank you for skewering Kanye West

Nothing against the man’s talent, but is there a single pop-culture icon more deserving of this (besides Billy Corgan)? source

Culture, Offbeat: Jack Wrangler, 1946-2009: A contradiction of a human being

  • Before turning to gay porn, he started his career in a religiously-themed NBC TV series in the 1950s. source
  • Wrangler starred in some landmark 1970s porn movies. We’ll trust you to Wikipedia them yourselves, kids. source
  • Despite being openly gay, he married a woman named Margaret Whiting – a big-band-era pop singer – in 1995. source
  • Whiting is 22 years Wrangler’s senior – and he admitted being openly gay as recently as last year. That’s crazy. source
  • His honest, open sexuality made him a gay icon. Wrangler died Tuesday at 62. Peace, bro. source

Culture: Speaking of octet mom Nadya Suleman, she’s going reality TV. Sigh.

  • She wants to find a man! Must like kids. In Touch is reporting that Suleman is in talks to be the topic of what promises to be the worst reality show ever, which combines the tabloid-friendly topics of dating and child care into a cluster&(*% of a television show. And, sadly, you will watch. Because she ticks you off and that’s what makes good TV. source

Culture: Good job, “Wolverine” pirates! You made Hugh Jackman really sad!

  • It’s a serious crime and there’s no doubt it’s very disappointing – I was heartbroken by it. Obviously people are seeing an unfinished film. It’s like a Ferrari without a paint job.
  • Hugh Jackman • Talking about the leak of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” that happened last week. At least one head already rolled after the incident. • source

Culture: Kal Penn left “House” in a really freaking intriguing way

  • David sort of had this ‘A-ha’ moment about how to both free Kal up to pursue other things and, most importantly, service where David wants to go at the end of the season with House’s story.
  • “House” executive producer Katie Jacobs • On the way that she and executive producer David Shore let Kal Penn leave the show. It involves a plot twist, and yes, the link spoils it. • source

Culture: Obama is gonna let a stoner run the White House (yay Kal Penn!)

Kumar, a.k.a. the smarter-than-you’d-think Kal Penn, just took a job in the Obama administration. High times. source

Culture, Music, Politics: Dear Eminem: The formula’s wearing very thin

  • We get it, man. Marshall, you’re one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and this is the make-or-break moment. Critics, who howled in disappointment at “Encore,” are wanting “Relapse” (out in May) to be a return to form. Fans are looking for the most notorious rapper of the last decade to start making hits again. But could you at least make it a little more surprising? source

  • The video Eminem is one of maybe four artists – Michael Jackson, Weird Al and Weezer being the other three – who nails the videos every time. “We Made You,” the first single from “Relapse,” is no exception. With pop-culture riffs all over the place, it manages to nail Jessica Simpson, “Star Trek” (see Dre as Capt. Kirk; LOL) and a host of other media icons with ease. source

  • However … … this is exactly the kind of song and exactly the kind of video that Eminem releases as a first single – and a decade in, and his aim’s getting a little off. Riffs on Bret Michaels and Portia di Rossi? Really? And we can see a few Republicans getting uppity over Sarah Palin’s trashing. Marshall, you need a new trick; this one’s just old and tired. source

Culture: In this post, Bob Dylan says crazy things about Barack Obama

  • He says profoundly outrageous things. He’s looking at a shrunken head inside of a glass case in some museum with a bunch of other people and he’s wondering if any of these people realize that they could be looking at one of their ancestors.
  • Bob Dylan • Talking about the intrigue he found in Barack Obama’s book, “Dreams From My Father.” Dylan says the president’s “like a fictional character, but he’s real.” No word if Dylan read “Dreams” in his outhouse. • source

Culture: Famous last words for Fox News movie scribe Roger Friedman

  • It took really less than seconds to start playing it all right onto my computer.
  • Roger Friedman • Fox News entertainment columnist, in a mini-review of the leaked version of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” the film being released by 20th Century Fox. Uber-boss Rupert Murdoch saw the review, apparently was livid and Fox News promptly fired Friedman. Good job, goober. • source
