  • In case you’re tired of hearing about people dying in Syria, here’s a picture of a coffee table that looks like the Starship Enterprise. It can be yours for a mere $3,100. [h/t Geekologie] source

U.S.: Get out your tinfoil hats: Census wants to count gay couples, too

  • George Takei’s husband has great taste in headwear. The former “Star Trek” star used his Starfleet uniform to get attention for this ad, which encourages same-sex couples to fill out the Census’ marital status section how they feel it should be filled out. It’s an encouraging step for the Census that they’re choosing to count gay couples this way. source

Tech: Scientists say they’ve invented transparent aluminum. Kickin’ rad!

It was talked about in Star Trek, and now Oxford University geniuses have done it. X-ray lasers were used to create it – though it was fleeting. source

Offbeat, Tech: For massive nerds only: Anti-virus software, in Klingon. (WTF?)

  • Somebody had to do it. And by had to, we mean shouldn’t have. Anti-virus manufacturer Sophos decided to cash in on the Trekkie hype in a novel way, releasing a version of their popular anti-virus software in Klingon. Because clearly, who the hell would use this? source

Culture: J.J. Abrams is like OMG about the “Star Trek” possibilities

  • The fun of this is that the destiny of these characters is in their hands — it’s not constrained by the pre-existing films or TV series. Believe me, whether it’s William Shatner or Khan … it would be ridiculous to not be open to those ideas.
  • “Star Trek” director J.J. Abrams • On the nice part of having a major hit film based on a legacy franchise – specifically one based on an alternate reality – on your hands: Thinking about the possibilities of what you can do with it next. If they get Shatner on board, fanbois are gonna be like whoa. • source

Culture, Politics: Our quick two-second review of the new “Star Trek”

  • The action was clearly well-paced. Abrams did a good job of keeping you on the edge of your seat. It was easy for non-fans to get into, while having winking cues for die-hards. source
  • Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, in particular, did justice to the original parts. Even Simon Pegg, who doesn’t physically resemble James Doohan, was well-cast as Scotty. source
  • We expect “Star Trek” to be just as revered as “Iron Man” was last summer. It’s a fun movie that goes broad without losing its street cred. Good show, J.J. Abrams! source
