Apparently the government threatened to withhold food aid from those who voted for the opposition. (Oh yeah, the guy in the center is wearing a John Deere hat.) source

Politics: Max Headroom: How pundits handled Rand Paul’s various fails

  • Canceled meetingThis summation that opened up “Meet the Press” kinda says it all. Paul said a lot of controversial stuff and then backed away when the spotlight got too hot. Gregory had a lot of questions to ask.

  • Sam Donaldson’s slam We forgot about this dude, and how awesome he can be at times. The way he pronounces “Maddow.” The way he takes Paul to task. “He didn’t say yes, but he didn’t say no, either.” Ow, that stings.

  • Maddow’s a “TV character”Sarah Palin suggests that Rachel Maddow was using Rand Paul’s appearance to make him sound stupid. To some degree, likely true. This doesn’t explain his comments about regulating BP on Friday.

World: Also not “Lost”: Using captured hikers, Iran wants to barter with U.S.

  • Iran wants their diplomats back! The fate of hikers Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal has been under question for months, after they were detained last summer for crossing into the country. While they got to meet with their collective mothers last week, they’re still in custody and have been denied access to their lawyer repeatedly. Hillary Clinton has been calling for their release, too, and Iran may be willing to do a prisoner swap to get back some Iranian diplomats held in Iraq. We’ll believe it when we see it. source

U.S.: Not the “Lost” series finale: Everyone points fingers in oil spill

  • It is clear the resources needed to protect our coast are still not here: boom, skimmers, vacuums, jack-up barges are all in short supply. Oil sits and waits for clean-up and every day that it waits for clean-up more and more marsh dies.
  • Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal • Criticizing both BP and the government for their massive fail in fixing up the oil spill. The feds are also unhappy with BP and want to take them off the case. Remember that tube the oil company put in to siphon off the leak? Well, it’s only pulling 1,360 barrels a day, way down from 5,000 just a few days ago. In other news, Rand Paul hasn’t said anything stupid today. source

Offbeat: Belgian dude loves his marbles while in the process of losing them

  • This is like an episode of “The Office.” This Belgian dude, 72, spends his days playing with marbles. He has his own room set aside just for the purpose of playing with marbles. He’s had the obsession since he was 12. Look, we understand obsession. We run a blog. But, come on. This is pathetic.

Tech: GPS in need of an upgrade, and it’s gonna cost a couple bucks

  • $8 billion to upgrade the widely used geo-navigation system source
  • before The system had a margin of error of about 20 feet – OK for driving, bad for walking a city street.
  • after After the upgrade, the system will be able to get within an arm’s length of the location. Whoa, cool!
  • » Not just for nav: It’s used for all sorts of purposes, including tracking financial transactions from ATMs and stock trades. In 2007, when the system was knocked offline in San Diego, cell phones and hospital paging systems stopped working. In other words, the technology, which currently uses 24 satellites to do its dirty work, is pretty useful.

Culture: Diehard Conan fans fight Leno on all fronts – including Hulu

  • Yeah, that’s one way to handle Leno angst. Some smart Conan fans on Hulu have been tagging episodes of The Tonight Show to trash on the guy who got “The Tonight Show” back. While it’s funny, it’s also against Hulu’s own terms. Still pretty funny. source

World: Japanese PM Yukio Hatoyama sides with U.S. military, feels the pain

  • It is true that I said I wanted to relocate the facility outside of Okinawa. However, I’d like to apologize that the conclusion is not what the Okinawans wanted.
