  • We are not looking to abuse our loyal users and make them pawns for the sake of trying to hurt another company. What is clear is that Apple most definitely would do that sort of thing as is evidenced by their recent behavior.

Biz: To: Media General, From: Us – Re: Your consolidation efforts

  • You know, people will notice this stuff eventually. Yesterday, newspaper chain Media General announced that it was combining the design and copy-editing efforts of its papers in Richmond, Va., Winston-Salem, N.C., and Tampa, Fla. – three papers that have nothing to do with one another geographically. They’re not the first papers to get treated this way, but they are the biggest. And it’s completely not fair to the communities. Here’s why:
  • These aren’t production jobs The nature of moves like these seems to assume that copy-editing and design functions aren’t really journalism – at least not in the same way as reporting. It’s a fundamental misunderstanding of the editorial process that puts distance between the journalism and the community.
  • Quality will suffer greatly The fact of the matter is, some dude copy-editing a story in Tampa will not understand the nature and nuance of a story in Winston-Salem. Nor will a designer in a similar position. While Media General is playing this as a move to maintain local focus, it won’t work. It’s a damn shame. source

Tech: Does Apple have a feasible reason for blocking Flash-created apps?

  • Yes, apparently. It’s related to multitasking. As the nerd world went into a tizzy yesterday after realizing the nature of the iPhone’s new developer’s agreement, it appears that the main complaint – a clause seemingly written to block Adobe Flash-compiled apps – might have been been put in for multitasking-related reasons. Essentially, code not written directly for the iPhone may not act as anticipated with the new features, AppleInsider reports. In other news, Adobe’s SEC filing today essentially admitted Apple’s anti-Flash tactics could really hurt the company. source

World: Somali militants think the BBC is evil, knock it off the air

  • BBC is owned by England and it spreads (a) colonial and Christian agenda in the Muslim world. BBC fights Islam … it is against the Islamic administration in Somalia.
  • A message from the al Shabaab militant group • Regarding their cutting off of BBC broadcasts in regions of Somalia controlled by the group. The broadcast service doesn’t have any studios in Somalia but broadcasts its main London feed to local FM stations in the war-torn nation. BBC’s Head of International Relations & Africa Region, Jerry Timmins, was upset about the actions. “We are disappointed in this interference with our broadcasts in Somalia as in the end,” he said, “it is the Somali people who are most affected.” source

Biz, U.S.: In Oklahoma City, the mall is technically a federal building

  • You gotta love toxic assets. After the government took on $70 billion in bad assets from AIG and Bear Stearns in the wake of their collective crap-outs, there’s been a lot of confusion as to what those assets were. Well, the feds own loans for hotels worldwide, the Miami airport and Chicago’s Civic Opera House. But after the owners of this mall couldn’t make their payments, the government took over the mall. Which is kinda hilarious. source
