Tech: Microsoft settles patent claim with ex-employee accused of spying

  • Miki Mullor and Microsoft make nice. Way back in February – you know, back before the beginning of time – we posted an article about a former Microsoft employee who reportedly double-dipped by working at MS while CEO of another company. Miki Mullor, who is the Chairman of Ancora Technologies Inc., contacted us today to inform us that the patent infringement lawsuit between him and Microsoft has been settled. Neither party claims responsibility in the case. source

Politics: Senate Democrats break a filibuster over a judicial candidate

  • Now if only they can do this with the health care bill. The Democrats have a 60-vote supermajority in the Senate, but you wouldn’t know it by the way that Indiana Judge David Hamilton’s nomination to a federal appeals court has languished. Eight months after he was first nominated (and four months after he cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee), a filibuster blocking a vote on Hamilton was finally broken today. We look forward to how the Democrats handle the health care bill. source

World: Daily poll: Like corruption? Vote for the most corrupt country!

  • First, we apologize for the late poll. Today was a slow news day and there wasn’t a lot of really pollworthy stuff. Anyway, today, Transparency International released its Corruption Perceptions Index for 2009, which is a survey of the most corrupt countries in the world. The top five are fairly obvious, if you follow the news. But what are we if not people who offer you the opportunity to vote?! So vote for the country you think is most corrupt. We left an option open for you to pick your own country. So go for it, kids.source

Tech: YouTube connects citizen journalism with real news organizations

  • News organizations can ask for citizen reporting; nonprofits can call-out for support videos around social campaigns; businesses can ask users to submit promotional videos about your brand. With YouTube Direct, the opportunities to connect directly with the YouTube community are endless.
  • The announcement on YouTube Direct • Describing how the service can be used for citizen media in conjunction with the mainstream media. This is cool. If it makes AP a little less stogy and stuck in its ways, it’s a smart idea. • source
