Biz: Wal-Mart offers free online shipping, with a couple catches

  • Want some crap from Wal-Mart? Well, based on what it is, you might be able to get it shipped for free over the holidays. This is a big change that could potentially give the retailer a huge leg-up on its competitors. The deal, which runs through December 20, includes giant flat-screen TVs, computers and other electronics. However, it doesn’t include furniture, toys, home appliances, some video games, baby crap (go to Diapers.com), jewelry, iPhones or iPads … wait. No iPhones or iPads? Not interested. Screw you, Wal-Mart. source

So Nirvana can have a naked human being on they cover but I can’t have a PAINTING of a monster with no arms and a polka dot tail and wingsMon Oct 18 03:02:27 via web

  • So yeah, wow. The “banned” Kanye album for “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” has a cover so weird that we don’t think that we can post it here. But Pitchfork has it, so go over there and look at the painting of a monster with no arms and a polka dot tail and wings. source

Biz: Show offs. Wal-Mart anticipated costly class-action bias suit

  • 1995 Wal-Mart hired a bunch of lawyers to see if they might be vulnerable to a costly class-action discrimination suit from female workers.
  • 2001 A bunch of female workers file a class-action suit against the company, claiming bias. It then winds its way through the courts.
  • 2010 A lower court decides to let the suit go forward. Wal-Mart plans to appeal that obvious decision all the way to the Supreme Court. source

Music, Tech: Do your legal MP3s have “secret” DRM? Some stores play dirty

  • Apple, Lala and Wal-Mart are culprits. Does the record industry have sights on putting the cat back n the bag? Despite the lack of digital rights management in nearly all of the online music stores, some embed your name in the file, something which could lead to backdoor digital rights management down the line – especially if cloud-based services like Lala (which we otherwise love) take off. Will the labels ever learn? And why are Apple, Wal-Mart and Lala enablers? source
