Music: VIDEO: Radiohead’s awkward-dance-heavy “Lotus Flower”

  • Never have we been so excited to see a middle-aged man dancing like a rockstar. Welcome back, Thom Yorke. Your fans missed you. The song rules, too – a clear continuation of “In Rainbows”-era awesomeness. Oh yeah, the album’s out now, not tomorrow. source

Music: Kanye doesn’t understand why retailers don’t like his album cover

So Nirvana can have a naked human being on they cover but I can’t have a PAINTING of a monster with no arms and a polka dot tail and wingsMon Oct 18 03:02:27 via web

  • So yeah, wow. The “banned” Kanye album for “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” has a cover so weird that we don’t think that we can post it here. But Pitchfork has it, so go over there and look at the painting of a monster with no arms and a polka dot tail and wings. source

Music: Bon Iver and Kanye West apparently work really well together

  • I was literally in the back room rolling a spliff with Rick Ross talking about what to do on the next part of a song. It was astonishing.
  • Justin “Bon Iver” Vernon • Discussing the surreal experience of working on Kanye West’s new album. One of the tracks, “Lost in the World” (which samples Vernon’s auto-tuned cathedral “Woods”) seems likely to be Kanye’s next single. Which is just insane. Is Vernon about to become a next-tier pop star? It’d be pretty awesome. Bon Iver is one of our favorite bands. source

Music: Taylor Swift: Can she sell a million copies in her first week?

  • It feels like if anybody can do it now, she could be the one. She has the sales base and heat from the last few albums. And with all the amazing things she has going on, she is as likely as anybody to reach a million units, especially with the efforts of Big Machine and Universal behind her.
  • Red Light Management and ATO Records president and CEO Will Botwin • Regarding the chances Taylor Swift can actually manage to sell a million copies of her upcoming “Speak Now” in its first week. While Eminem got close recently, thanks to his 741,000-strong debut of “Recovery” back in June, Swift could really pull it off. The things that might hold her back, though? Well, her digital sales have been traditionally weak, her label might charge the full sticker price for her album, her style of music limits how many formats would be willing to play her songs, and it’s possible she may have peaked already. At age 20. source

Music: Coming soon: A massively-debated list from Pitchfork

Music: Radiohead’s in no rush to make a new album. Sadly.

  • The next LP? Not right away Thom Yorke admitted this much in a recent issue of The Believer, causing thousands of hipsters to have early-onset heart attacks. “None of us want to go into that creative hoo-ha of a long-play record again,” says Yorke. “Not straight off.” Part of it is that they don’t want to do an album like “In Rainbows” again. Yorke continues: “Not that it’s not good, I just can’t… bear… that.”
  • Expect one-offs instead Radiohead, however, will continue to release special one-off things, such as “Harry Patch [In Memory Of],” the memorial song they created for a World War I soldier who recently died. Orchestral work is also on the table. Despite the awesomeness of projects like this, “In Rainbows” is evidence of the LP’s greatness and it’d be a shame to see them stop. source

Tech: Apple and the major labels butt heads over album-art approaches

  • Apple’s approach Last night, word came out that Apple was working on a new digital album format that would include liner notes, visuals, interactive features and the whole kit and caboodle. It’s code-named “Cocktail,” and it’s an attempt to get you jerks to buy albums.
  • The labels’ approach However, the major labels say that Apple chose to come up with something on their own that the labels suggested 18 months ago. Since when has Apple been known to do that? The labels are working on a similar type of feature for everyone else. source

Music: Instant gratification or big reward? Jay Reatard weighs in

  • A single is really quick, man. You can get it out, and in two months have it on your merch table. And albums can take a really long time. But when you get done with an album, it’s a lot more fulfilling.
  • Jay Reatard • in an interview with The Onion A.V. Club about the value of doing albums over singles; the punk rocker is known for doing both really well. • source
