Politics: The Alvin Greene saga: When in doubt, blame hackers

  • yes South Carolina uses touch-screen voting devices. Rep. James Clyburn thinks that the 12,000 voting machines were hacked, leading to Alvin Greene’s victory, which candidate Vic Rawl is protesting.
  • no The state’s election commission says that theory is bunk. Spokesman Chris Whitmire says that the machines are reliable and that “no candidate has made this claim before.” Likely story. source

Politics: Only notable S.C. Democrat: Alvin Greene is a plant

  • There were some real shenanigans going on in the South Carolina primary. I don’t know if he was a Republican plant; he was someone’s plant.
  • Rep. James Clyburn • On Alvin Greene’s surprise victory in the South Carolina Democratic Senate primary. Clyburn, probably the best-known South Carolina Democrat, seems convinced that someone gave Greene the money for the filing fee. “Somebody gave him that $10,000 and he who took it should be investigated, and he who gave it should be investigated,” Clyburn said. Dude, while you may be right, let’s face it. The reason Greene won is because the other guy was an absolute non-entity too. Even he had only a handful of funds compared to Jim “I’m going to coast to victory” DeMint. source

Politics: Old-school documentary: Crude oil good for oysters! Really!

  • This chestnut from the ’60s seems all the more ironic in the wake of the current oil spill. Skip to around the 9-minute mark to see a bunch of oysters who really like crude oil. The American Petroleum Institute knows a thing or two about making bad PR seem good. source

Offbeat: Icelandic politics so bad, comedy parties are winning elections

  • Reykjavik better hope these jokers actually bring Disneyland. Tina Turner, eat your heart out. This commercial is not only laugh-out-loud hilarious, it was incredibly effective, too. Jón Gnarr of “The Best Party” got more than he bargained for when his just-created party won 34.7% of the vote in the city’s local election, topping everyone else and securing six out of the 15 city council seats. Gnarr has the comic sensibility of Ricky Gervais without the use of the letter C. (And more promises of towels.) source

Offbeat: British lout who won lottery right back where he first started

  • Disclosure: This story is from The Daily Mail. You know, that bastion of good journalism and better sensationalism. If it’s wrong, blame them. But we like running stories about chavs done good. So here goes.
  • 2002 Former garbage man Michael Carroll, 19, picks up his £9.7 million lotto prize wearing an ankle bracelet.
  • 2003 Carroll was spending £2,000 per day on crack cocaine and living the life of a guy who basically parties all day.
  • 2008 He was run out of his own house by dog- killing thugs, and on his last million pounds; he had to sell all his cars to get by.
  • 2010At 26, he’s broke and living off a £42-per-week unemployment stipend. He wants to be a garbage man again. source

Offbeat: Puerto Rican shooting victim’s funeral ditches the boring coffin

  • This isn’t a Madame Tussauds wax figure. No, this guy is actually dead, he’s been embalmed, and he’s sitting on a motorcycle (which he was given by his uncle) at his wake. The deceased, David Morales Colón, was recently killed in a shooting at the far-too-sad age of 22. It’s the way he probably wants to be remembered. When we die, we want to be embalmed sitting at a coffee shop, typing on a MacBook. Less fun, but more accurate. (Thanks @putneydm) source
