U.S.: Why did the U.S. change its airline security standards, anyway?

  • Simple: Some of the countries being targeted complained. After December’s near-miss terror incident involving the underwear bomber, the U.S. put people fourteen nations on a heightened security checklist. Some of the countries, including Nigeria (where Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab came from) complained about the treatment because they were allies of the U.S. So the U.S. decided to switch to more general terrorist profiling techniques. Good idea, or too soft on terror? We’ll find out. source

World: Jihad Jane not an isolated incident. Just ask Jamie Paulin-Ramirez.

  • He said that Christians will burn in hellfire. That’s what they are teaching this baby.
  • Christine Mott • Grandmother of a boy whose mother, Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, fell in with an Islamic terrorist cell that was plotting to kill a Swedish cartoonist. Paulin-Ramirez, who’s from Colorado, was arrested in Ireland on Tuesday along with a bunch of other members of that group, which also included “Jihad Jane” among its membership. She was later released. When you’ve lost housewives from Colorado and precocious six-year-old boys to radical Islam, much is wrong with this world. source

Culture: Jack Bauer’s fate could get outfoxed by a peacock

  • “24” could leave Fox soon, only to show up on NBC. Could the never-ending adventures of Jack Bauer live another day? That’s the word on the street from NBC, which is itching for more dramas after that whole Jay Leno experiment went bust. Fox is thinking about canceling the show due to dipping ratings and rising costs, which would open the producers up to make Jack Bauer movies, but NBC’s gauntlet could throw a wrench in that plan. source

World: Was Adam Gadahn arrested? Let’s compare various sources

  • Reuters They claim that Gadahn, the former American, was caught and it’s a pretty big deal.
  • NYT They say it’s not him at all, and that early reports were “confused.” He’s not on their front page.
  • CNN They claim there are “conflicting reports” on whether he was caught. No #*(@, sherlock.

U.S.: The rise of the “lone wolf” extremist hard to combat

  • We have seen an increase in the lone wolf type attacks, which, from a law enforcement and investigation perspective, are the most challenging. Why? Because by definition they’re not conspiring.
  • Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano • Discussing “lone wolf” attacks like the ones by John Patrick Bedell (who shot two Pentagon security guards last week), Joe Stack (who flew a plane into an IRS building in February) and Johnny Lee Wicks (who was killed in a January courthouse attack after losing a case regarding his Social Security benefits). For those playing at home, that’s three “lone wolf” attacks in three months, which is problematic for law enforcement, because it’s not easy to prevent such cases. source

U.S.: American al-Qaeda spokesman: Follow Ft. Hood shooter’s example

  • You shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking that military bases are the only high-value targets in America and the West. On the contrary, there are countless other strategic places, institutions and installations which, by striking, the Muslim can do major damage.
  • American-born al-Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn • Regarding Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan and the example he set for other America-based terrorists. Gadahn says terrorists should go after “high-value targets.” “Nidal Hasan is a pioneer, a trailblazer and a role-model who has opened a door, lit a path and shown the way forward for every Muslim who finds himself among the unbelievers,” Gadahn said. source
