Culture: Larry King should retire because he sucks: The NYT & us

  • In Lady Gaga, Mr. King had a willing, wildly famous subject. If he can no longer hit a hanging curve ball over the middle of the plate, shouldn’t CNN be thinking hard about who is on deck?
  • New York Times media writer David Carr • Suggesting exactly why Larry King kinda sucks at his job. He has flopped with numerous recent interviews, specifically with Gaga. And the worst part? CNN doesn’t have anyone to replace him. They’re so desperate to find someone to replace Campbell Brown that they’re talking to Eliot Spitzer (which we actually think would be a good idea). And, ultimately, Carr argues, he may find himself in a Helen Thomas situation if he doesn’t get ready to move on. Do the right thing, Larry. Retire. source

Politics: Let’s face it. Helen Thomas deserved better than this.

  • Don’t get us wrong. What she said was offensive. It was worth dismissal. But then again, it was one terrible, damaging statement in a career which ranks up there with some of journalism’s greatest. As Twitter user Michael Markman notes, Michael Savage and Glenn Beck have said things nearly as offensive before lunch, and they get to keep their jobs. And now it’s over. Just like that. It’s not fair that she didn’t get to quit on her own terms. Let’s not remember her career for this gaffe but the 50 years that came before it. She deserves it. source

Offbeat: Feel-good story: 99-year-old woman’s first computer an iPad

  • Admit it, you needed a pick-me up. Good thing we have Virginia Campbell, the 99-year-old woman and nursing home resident making sense of her new digital toy. The poet and writer had never owned a computer before, but read a lot. Unfortunately, her eyesight was going bad, so the hype around the device sucked her in. And now she can read on this device really easily. Man, she’s gonna be so upset when she realizes it doesn’t run Flash. source

U.S.: Justice John Paul Stevens: I may retire, but I’ll let you guys know

  • I do have to fish or cut bait, just for my own personal peace of mind and also in fairness to the process. The president and the Senate need plenty of time to fill a vacancy.
  • Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens • Regarding his pending decision on whether or not to stay a justice. Dude’s not only the most liberal justice (despite getting the nod from president Gerald Ford), but at 89 (90 on April 20) he’s also the second-oldest and fourth-longest-serving in the court’s history. Obama likely wants to replace him soon because he represents one of the four liberal-leaning votes on the court, and he doesn’t have many years left in him. source

U.S.: Sen. Byron Dorgan, along with his 60th vote, plans to retire

  • The North Dakota senator was seen as super-vulnerable. The clock is ticking on the Democratic supermajority in the Senate, which promises to have many kinks in its armor come November. With Dorgan’s retirement, the seat will likely flip to the Republican column. Even before this, he was seen as one of the most vulnerable senators. Peace, brah. Loved the three terms. source
