World: Getting back to basic fears, shark attacks rise in 2010

  • Shark week? More like shark year: Reported shark attack rates reached their highest level since 2000 last year, topping out at seventy-nine. The most publicized were likely those in the Red Sea, where there were five attacks in four days, and four of those attacks were thought to have been done by just two sharks. Still, the biggest takeaway from this? Shark attacks are still, as ever, exceedingly rare, even with repeat offenders like the Red Sea duo stalking the waters. source

Politics: Despite enthusiasm gap, lots of Dems donating to re-election effort

  • $16 million raised by the Democratic National Committee in September
  • 2002 last time the DNC raised this much during the midterms source
  • » The DNC is in charge of re-electing Democrats. Although conventional wisdom says that Democrats are in big trouble this November, that hasn’t stopped them from pulling in record amounts of cash for their national re-election effort. Fun fact: 80% of the money came from low-dollar donors online and through the mail, as opposed to high-priced fund-raising dinners, George Soros, or anti-American communists intent on keeping Obama in power. The Republicans’ counterpart organization, the RNC, has not yet revealed its September totals.

U.S.: Sen. Byron Dorgan, along with his 60th vote, plans to retire

  • The North Dakota senator was seen as super-vulnerable. The clock is ticking on the Democratic supermajority in the Senate, which promises to have many kinks in its armor come November. With Dorgan’s retirement, the seat will likely flip to the Republican column. Even before this, he was seen as one of the most vulnerable senators. Peace, brah. Loved the three terms. source

Culture: Futurama is back! They just might have to, umm, rejig the cast a bit

  • The good news: Futurama will return in 2010. The bad news: it might be with a new cast. The reason: money, of course. Word on the street is that original cast members John DiMaggio, Katey Sagal and Billy West want a bit more than Fox is willing to cough up. Does it matter if it’s just a cartoon? source
