World: Why are Chechen women suspected? They have a history of attacks

  • 2002 Nearly 40 Chechen rebels (including women) stormed a Moscow theater, an attack which led to a huge loss of life.
  • 2003 Rebels attempted to assassinate Chechen president Akhmad Kadyrov, who supported the Russian government.
  • 2004 Chechen rebels (including women) raided a Beslan, North Ossetia, school. Hundreds were killed, including children.
  • » Why so violent? Part of it is Russia’s history with Chechnya. In recent years, the Russian military has committed a wave of destruction in the region so terrible that it’s led to wide reports of post-traumatic stress syndrome among women. Many, including women involved in the 2002 theater siege, were brutally raped by Russian soldiers. source

U.S.: Accuser in Duke lacrosse case charged with some crazy stuff

  • Crystal Mangum, the Duke lacrosse rape accuser, was charged with attempted murder in a domestic abuse case in Durham, N.C., after getting in a violent confrontation with her boyfriend Milton Walker and setting his clothes on fire in a bathtub. Above is her police mugshot. We expect this photo to get shown on TV a lot today. source

  • With the state that the girl was in after the incident, I really felt that it would go towards making her life a lot better over the next couple of years.
  • Lloyd Gardner • On giving up a huge reward to the victim of the crime. Gardner offered a key piece of evidence that solved a 2006 rape. He was offered a £10,000 reward for leading to the rapist’s conviction, but he deferred it to the victim. Class act. Gardner says, if he kept the money, he likely would have spent the money on “an expensive car or something which doesn’t seem right.” • source

U.S.: Falsified rape allegations shock, then anger Hofstra students

  • Now we hear it’s not real. She is causing herself embarrassment because it’s her first year here. She says all this and it’s not true.
  • Hofstra University student Monique Alvarado • On hearing that a fellow student’s rape allegations were untrue. The unnamed student claimed five men brutally assaulted her in her dorm room – and those men were named and arrested. Alvarado’s words were echoed by fellow student Chris Blue in reference to a Hofstra student who was arrested: “The young man’s life is still going to be ruined. The girl lied about a serious thing.” • source

  • 50 years length of time the man at the center of the Jaycee Dugard case was sentenced for the rape of Katie Callaway Hall
  • 11 years length of time Garrido actually served; not long after his release, Dugard was kidnapped – way to go, justice system source

Sports: Sex, abortion, extortion: Rick Pitino’s got a mess on his hands

  • Several months ago Coach Pitino informed me about the alleged extortion attempt. I’ve now been informed that there may be other details which, if true, I find surprising. My thoughts are with Coach Pitino and his family.
  • University of Louisville President James Ramsey • Regarding the bizarre mess his star basketball coach, Rick Pitino, has found himself in. Pitino himself is actually clean and hasn’t been charged with a crime. But Karen Sypher, a waitress at a Louisville restaurant, allegedly had sex with him (which Pitino admits), forced him to pay for an abortion for her, and – years later – tried to extort him by alleging rape charges against him. You know, pretty much the kind of thing you don’t want to have spill out into the press. Best of luck, Rick – it sounds like you’ve got a lot to deal with at the moment. • source

  • Really, just forget everything we said. Women who drink booze are more likely to get raped…um, never mind. Women who dress “provocatively” are more likely to get raped…er, scratch that. Actually, remember everything we wrote in that article June 23? Yeah, we figured you would. Now you can go ahead and forget it all, wasn’t filled with a lot of “truthiness”…sorry. source
