Tech: Apple does a bunch of updates (OSX Lion!), kills off a classic breadwinner

  • cool While exterior changes didn’t happen (did it need any?) the new MacBook Air is a heckuva lot faster and comes with solid-state drives by default.
  • cooler The Mac Mini, sort of the redheaded stepchild of the Mac line, also got a fresh upgrade — notably without an optical drive of any kind.
  • coolest Mac. OSX. Lion. In the Mac App Store. You don’t even need to leave your apartment to upgrade it, guys. Do it naked if you want. source
  • » It’s so hard to say goodbye … Not all changes were in the form of hello, however. The polycarbonate MacBook, a stalwart of the line since Apple’s move to Intel, is gone, effectively replaced by the MacBook Air. It’s the first time in a decade that Apple hasn’t sold a white plastic notebook of any kind. A sad day, but one full of new beginnings, right?

Tech: Google on Windows: That’s nasty, use OSX or Linux instead

  • nope Reportedly, new Google employees won’t be able to use Windows as one of their OS options anymore; it’s just Mac and Linux.
  • why? Blame it on security concerns in the wake of Google’s whole hack thang with China that happened a few months ago. source
  • » The real question: How many of their employees are holdouts working on Amiga or BeOS? Really, we want to know. If this is a company of nerds, there has to be at least one.

Tech: Dear Apple: Please don’t load OSX up with annoying ads

  • They applied for a patent to do just that. Yikes. Word on the street is that Apple applied for a scary-sounding patent which would allow them to place advertisements within a reduced-cost version of their operating system. The ads would be audiovisual in nature and would limit system functionality when playing. May we just say to Steve Jobs and company: Are you out of your )#&(!)(# mind? source

Tech: Duh: Price Snow Leopard at $29, and people buy it in droves

  • $100 the decrease in price from Leopard (Mac OSX 10.5) to Snow Leopard (Mac OSX 10.6)
  • 2x as many people bought 10.6 than 10.5 at launch; the number is 4x more than 10.4, too source

Offbeat, Tech: Forget Apple’s Snow Leopard. Here are some real ones.

And unlike the new version of Mac OSX, nobody’s going to unfavorably compare these cats to Windows Vista – to their face. source

Tech: *shakes head* … Someone had to compare Snow Leopard to Vista.

  • This is the Vista of Apple’s history. Not that much. I know – I’m misconstruing the gravity of it, but this is kinda the closest thing to Apple’s Vista.
  • CNET’s Brian Cooley • Describing the various incompatibilities created by the new version of Mac OSX. On top of many programs not working (100 is a number being thrown around), it includes ancient versions of Flash and Java, and has bricked some machines. Hmm. And one thing we noticed: Dragging and dropping to the dock doesn’t work right anymore. The result? NERD RAGE. • source

Tech: Protip: If you installed Snow Leopard, upgrade Flash. Now.

  • The new Mac version installs a long-outdated version of Adobe’s app. You might have had a fully-upgraded version of Flash before upgrading to Snow Leopard last week, but you probably don’t have it this week. That’s because, as part of Apple’s install process, it installs Flash Player 10.0.23.1, an old version with known vulnerabilities. (The current version is 10.0.32.18.) So, do yourself a favor, guys. Upgrade Flash. Now. source

Tech: Windows 7: Still expensive, but cheaper than Vista

  • $119 The price the average consumer will pay to upgrade to the Home Edition from Windows XP or Vista; the most expensive package – a new version of Ultimate – costs $319
  • 10% The decrease in prices for Windows 7 from Windows Vista – which is nice, but Apple’s Mac OSX Snow Leopard will only cost $29 for most consumers to upgrade source
