Offbeat: Guy holds onto winning lottery ticket way too freaking long

  • Let’s say you had a winning lottery ticket. What would you do with it? Would you turn it in as soon as possible, knowing that you’d have to deal with the glow of the spotlight? Would you sit on it? Or would you go in on the last day to accept your prize, creating an unusual situation that draws as much, if not more attention, than accepting the prize in the first place would have? If you’re North Carolina resident Raleigh Hill, you choose the latter. Hill, even though he know he had the winning lottery ticket, waited a few weeks to even tell his wife Erin, then proceded to procrastinate on the ticket to the point where he lost the thing in a shoebox. U.S.: Unlucky lottery winner a domestic abuse victim, now in hiding

  • great Idaho single mom Holly Lahti had a turn of great luck after winning a $190 million in a Mega Millions lottery jackpot over a week ago. This is usually good news.
  • awful Sadly, the feel-good story just couldn’t last. Lahti’s 2003 mugshot showed clear signs of abuse. She’s long been separated from her husband.

  • 2003 Carroll was spending £2,000 per day on crack cocaine and living the life of a guy who basically parties all day.
  • 2008 He was run out of his own house by dog- killing thugs, and on his last million pounds; he had to sell all his cars to get by.

Offbeat: South Africa giveth and taketh away lottery prizes very quickly

  • Stanley Philander wasn’t the big winner of Saturday’s PowerBall drawing. Whoops. Philander, 52, gladly took the $12 million prize, but another woman really won. He had bought a ticket with the winning numbers after the drawing and went to pick up his prize. Due to the large divide between rich and poor in the country, Philander’s family had to be taken to a secret location for their own protection after winning. We wonder if he’s going to need another secret location after losing. source
