Sports: The Minnesota Vikings take a breather on Brett Favre

  • The guy who won’t retire did a no-show today. Quarterback Brett Favre – who retired from the team where he spent most of his career, then unretired with a new team, then retired again, and now seems ready unretire again and turn heel – is, at least for now, off the table for the Minnesota Vikings. Why? He missed some team functions he was required to be at. Depending on how his post-surgery shoulder feels, he could be back on the table later, though. He’s playing hokey-pokey pretty hardcore for a football player, eh? source

Sports: Tom Brady’s surgeon thinks he’s an amazing in be … er, rehab

  • With regard to his recovery of strength, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. With an average person, it would have taken probably twice as long to get range of motion and strength back.
  • Dr. Neal ElAttrache • On his star surgery subject’s speedy recovery from a catastrophic knee injury last season. Brady, who previously led the New England Patriots to an undefeated regular (but not full) season, had his knee ganked in the first game of last season, and his backup, Matt Cassel, didn’t screw up too bad while papa bear was gone. • source

Offbeat, Sports: NFL players and Freightliner trucks don’t mix with cops

  • Uhhhhhhh, that’s quite the adventure, Randy Starks … Starks, a 25-year-old defensive end for the Miami Dolphins, was arrested after a police chase in which he managed to squeeze 13 people inside the passenger area of a Freightliner truck, which usually seats about 4. He also had a woman sitting on his lap. Due to traffic, police were forced to chase Starks by foot. The truck, traveling at slow speeds, hit one officer before another one drew Starks’ attention and arrested him. The Dolphins, who had no comment, are trying to figure out WTF their player did. So are we. source

Politics, Sports: Dear Brett Favre: Stay retired, you old whiny dude. OK?

  • Please. Brett. We love you. You’re awesome. You had a great career with the Green Bay Packers. You got to date Mary back in 1997. But you don’t know the definition of the word retirement. You created the greatest dramabomb ever when you un-retired, then left for the New York Jets, then flopped. source

  • Pretty please? Now we hear word that you’re talking to the Minnesota Vikings about a QB position. Why? Did Mississippi get a little old and tired for you? Stay at home. Mow the lawn. Cook some burgers on the grill. Run for school board president. Anything, ANYTHING, but play again. PLEEEEAAAASSEE? source

U.S.: Five fast facts about Jack Kemp, 1935-2009

  • His football success was unlikely: He was a late-round pick by Detroit and a journeyman QB for years. source
  • The Buffalo Bills, the team with which he had MVP-level success, picked him up on a $100 waiver. source
  • Kemp got into the political game very soon after retiring from football in 1969, getting elected in 1970. source
  • The popular nine-term Republican congressman eventually had a failed presidential bid in 1988. source
  • He’s best-known, however, for being Bob Dole’s veep choice in his failed 1996 presidential run. source

Sports, U.S.: The Bowl Championship Series is serious politics. Seriously.

  • BCS or BS? Yesterday, representatives for NCAA college football went to congress to argue their reasons for keeping the Bowl Championship Series the bizarre non-playoff-based entity it currently is. BCS coordinator John Swofford claims that changing the format to a playoff would threaten to kill the bowls as well as their sponsorships and TV revenue. source

  • Barton’s bill Rep. Joe Barton of Texas apparently has had enough, specifically, as he’s introduced a bill which would prevent the NCAA from labeling something a national championship if it wasn’t the result of a playoff. Because this is clearly the biggest problem facing our country right now. (On a side note, Obama favors a playoff.) source

Sports: Matthew Stafford says he’s ready to save the sucky Lions

  • I think I’m prepared. I’ve been through a lot in my football career. Obviously in college you win more football games than you do in the NFL and you don’t lose as many. Every guy has to adjust to that coming out of college to the pros, but I feel I’m ready for the challenge.
  • Quarterback Matthew Stafford • The Detroit Lions’ top pick in the NFL draft yesterday, on the immense amount of pressure he faces as the guy that everyone’s going to be looking at for answers. The Lions spent enough on the former Georgia star that fans will expect answers, or at least a better-than-winless season out of a historically bad team. • source

Sports: John Madden retiring? But who will bring Turducken to the masses?

  • *Sob* It’s true. The football color commentary icon, who is 73, is now hanging up his mic. He only had a major video game franchise and a long history of saying crazy things under his belt. Man, we just don’t know what we’re going to do anymore. He’s like an icon of everything wrong – and right – with America. source

Sports: Da Bears on da new guy, Jay Cutler

  • He had some things that happened in Denver. We recognized those, but we treated them as just speed bumps, part of the growing process.
  • Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo • Whose team traded to get Jay Cutler out of a strained situation with the Denver Broncos. They better like it; if he doesn’t work out, they just lost a couple of first-round picks for the honor. • source
