Culture: BYU forward Brandon Davies suspended for… consensual sex?

  • The showers only run cold: Brigham Young University, named after the Mormon leader of yesteryear, has a basketball team, and a rather good one. They also, however, have a student honor code that states you can’t have premarital sex. Which lead to the deeply peculiar (especially within the “win-at-all-costs” realm of collegiate athletics) revelation that BYU pivot Brandon Davies had been suspended from the team yesterday for having consensual sex with his girlfriend. Obviously, as long as they’re not violent or forced over non-believers, religious tenets are anybody’s personal right. But there’s a decent chance not all of those players are Mormon, and from the view of a secular player sitting on that bench, it must be frustrating to have your season disrupted by this. source

Sports: UNC’s Tyler Hansbrough to haters: Screw you, I’m still hot

  • I’m not worried about it. It’s just a bunch of people saying whatever they want. I think I’ll prove a lot of people wrong.
  • North Carolina superstar and future NBA draft pick Tyler Hansbrough • On his chances of replicating his success at UNC in the NBA. Hansbrough, the 2008 Naismith and Wooden awards winner, thinks that his style of play might actually be better-suited to the NBA due to the fact that there’s more one-on-one defending, while in college he “had three people guarding me for the past three years.” • source

Sports: You gotta hand it to Kevin Laue: He can sure play basketball

  • The one-handed Laue now has a Division I scholarship. The 6-foot-10 Laue, who’s begging to have a comeback story made about him for HBO or possibly ESPN, will be playing for Manhattan College next fall. He played at the tough Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia and did well against a bunch of top prospects. Laue, who lost his arm below his elbow during birth, realizes he may have been a tough sell at any school. “It’s a business,” he said. “Their jobs are all on the line. It’s much safer to take a two-handed guy my size that got beat by me.” source

Sports, U.S.: The Bowl Championship Series is serious politics. Seriously.

  • BCS or BS? Yesterday, representatives for NCAA college football went to congress to argue their reasons for keeping the Bowl Championship Series the bizarre non-playoff-based entity it currently is. BCS coordinator John Swofford claims that changing the format to a playoff would threaten to kill the bowls as well as their sponsorships and TV revenue.
  • Barton’s bill Rep. Joe Barton of Texas apparently has had enough, specifically, as he’s introduced a bill which would prevent the NCAA from labeling something a national championship if it wasn’t the result of a playoff. Because this is clearly the biggest problem facing our country right now. (On a side note, Obama favors a playoff.) source
