Culture: “Linsanity”: People already trying to trademark Jeremy Lin’s success

  • Yenchin Chang is a fan of Jeremy Lin, above. Like Lin, he’s from California. Like Lin, he’s also Taiwanese. But unlike Lin, he filed a trademark application for the phrase “Linsanity” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Why? “I wanted to be a part of the excitement,” Chang said. “I’m very proud of Jeremy.” Chang was one of two people to file for the trademark in the past week. The other guy, Andrew W. Slayton, claims to have coached Lin in high school, though this fact hasn’t been confirmed; Chang doesn’t even know Lin, but just wanted to have fun with the trademark for a bit. *facepalm* (photo by nikk_la on Flickr) source

Culture, Sports, U.S.: Jeremy Lin lights up Lakers, sets new team record for Knicks

  • 89 points scored by Jeremy Lin during his first three starts with the New York Knicks this week
  • 80 points scored by former team record-holder Bill Cartwright in his first three starts, way back in 1979-1980 source
  • » What can’t he do? With a solid showing against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, including a career-high 38 points scored, Jeremy Lin set a new Knicks team record (EDIT: And league record) for the most points scored by a player in their first three starts since the NBA-ABA merger. He’s also one game away from matching Lebron James’ — 20 point, 5 assist, 50 percent shooting — four-game performance streak, the longest streak by any player this season.

Sports: Yo, Isiah Thomas: Coach your team before you start whining

  • “B … but … *sob* We wanted to play Ohio State!” New Florida International University coach Isiah Thomas, looking to recover from a rep essentially decimated by years of crappy decisions for the New York Knicks, is off to a bad start. This morning, it was reported that Thomas was threatening to pull his team out of an early season game against North Carolina – no spring chicken, for sure – because the school had their heart set on playing Ohio State. When you earn the right to whine, Isiah, you can. For now, accept the fact that you’ve been called back to single-A and you no longer call the shots. source

Sports: Stephon Marbury: Eh, I’m not signed. Guess I’ll smoke pot

  • I’m not under contract … I smoke weed occasionally. … I’m not driving … I’m following the rules.
  • Former New York Knick Stephon Marbury • Discussing (on camera because he’s an idiot) how he’s keeping on the straight and narrow now that he’s an unsigned NBA player. Marbury’s reputation took a tumble after he stunk up the room and angered his teammates as a Knick, and other teams are wary of signing him due to this rep. We’re sure the admission, no matter how noble, won’t help his chances. • source

  • Thomas, as both coach and executive, provided the Knicks with a few of their worst seasons and dumbest moves ever. source
  • Now Thomas will go the university route to coach Florida International University. Watch out guys; he has a history. source

Sports: Stan Van Gundy tries starting Patrick Ewing drama with the Knicks

  • They honor him, but while they’ve got a lot of ex-players in their organization, they’ve never made any move to try to hire him. That to me is amazing.
  • Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy • On his assistant Patrick Ewing, a major star for the New York Knicks in the 80s and 90s. Despite this (and a pretty pathetic recent history), the Knicks have made no attempt to make Ewing a part of the team’s staff or management. Well, at least he’s big-upping a big man instead of tearing one down. • source

Sports: Stephon Marbury: Knicks drama over, are the Celtics next?

  • That’s what appears to be the case. Marbury spent months embroiled in drama with his former team, who worked out a buyout with him yesterday. He hasn’t been on the basketball court lately as a result of the drama. The Celtics seem to be his next spot. While Boston themselves wouldn’t comment, Marbury told the Boston Globe he was “excited about the new beginning.” Personally, we blame the Starburys. source
