World: Study: Chocolate could help lower heart risk for women

  • claimEat more chocolate (in moderation), have a lower risk of getting a stroke? A Swedish study of 33,000 women seemed to come to that sweet confectionary conclusion. Dark chocolate had a better effect on heart health than other kinds.
  • rebuttal Doctors still haven’t recommended chocolate as the best way to reduce the risk of having a stroke, though. They do recommend “blood pressure medicine, quitting smoking, exercising more and eating a healthier diet.” source

Biz: Protip: Sports drinks great for exercise, not for kids

  • Sports drinks probably aren’t the best choice for kids, because they could lead to obesity, according to a new study. Researchers suggest that children drink water for hydration instead, because there aren’t the extra calories you might find in sports drinks like Gatorade or Powerade. The study also looked at kids that were drinking energy drinks after exercise, coming to the somewhat obvious finding that they’re bad for kids because of the extra stimulants in them — including caffeine. A spokesperson for the American Beverage Association, an industry group, notes that the drinks “are not intended for young consumers.” source

U.S.: Obvious thing of the day: Computers in offices make us fat, lazy

  • We have transitioned from jobs that primarily involved doing physical activity on our feet to ones where most of us make our living while sitting.
  • Pennington Biomedical Research Center researcher Timothy Church • Describing why we use far fewer calories at work now than we did 30 years ago. To put it simply, we sit around a lot, a fact which anyone could tell you by the mere fact that they too sit around at their computers all day. Could someone create … like a Wii version of Excel or something like that? So we might have to exercise while adding things to a spreadsheet or blogging or cutting out a photo in Photoshop? Or could you turn our computers into treadmills that only power on while we’re running on them? Seems like all this technology at our disposable makes us lazy and fat or something. source

Culture: Here’s an image of the Stephen Colbert namesake space treadmill

COLBERT, the treadmill
  • They’re sure running with this joke. (Sorry.) As you might remember, a few months back, Stephen Colbert attempted to win a contest to get a part of the International Space Station named after him. He won, but NASA chose to name this treadmill after him instead. Which, is still incredibly awesome. Admit it.source

Offbeat, Tech: Two nerds figured out a way to get nerds to exercise more

  • You pedal the bike, the Internet goes faster. It’s a total carrot on a stick thing. Or at least a really entertaining viral video of a technology we’d never use. Just think, though, if this showed up in gyms, people would use it.source

Biz, U.S.: Know those giant fitness balls? They’re getting recalled en masse

  • The “burst-resistant” balls apparently burst. If you go to a gym where someone’s stretching on a big plastic ball, or are in an office where someone at their desk is sitting on a giant ball claiming it helps their back, you’ve seen ’em. Apparently, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (along with manufacturer EB Brands) is voluntarily recalling 3 million of the balls, saying that they can burst when overinflated, causing the person sitting on them to fall. The company, which manufactures them under such brand names as Everlast and and Valeo, received 47 reports of just that sort of thing happening. Yikes. source

Tech, World: “Wii Fit” has the opposite effect for this guy who died

  • He was healthy. Very healthy, actually. He rode bikes, he played drums in a rock band, yet Tim Eves couldn’t handle the physical activity of the Nintendo Wii’s popular “Wii Fit.” The twentysomething Brit collapsed and died in front of his girlfriend and best friend. Yikes. :( source
