Sports: The NBA would like to have a word with LeBron James

  • Everything’s big when you follow the NBA, so I’m going to step back and ask not to be pushed too hard right now [on the incident]. I’ve got a few irons in the fire.
  • NBA Commissioner David Stern • On the “Handshakegate” drama facing LeBron James after he failed to shake hands or talk to the media after Cleveland’s playoff-series-losing loss to the Orlando Magic the other night. Despite the drama, James, one of the league’s biggest teddy bears, would not be fined. “We haven’t had any issues with him before at all,” said NBA spokesman Tim Frank. • source

Sports: Why we loooooove Charles Barkley, reason No. 353,759

  • While Charles often makes jokes about his producer during our telecasts, he used poor judgment on Saturday during our NBA coverage. His comment was inappropriate and TNT apologizes to our viewers. We have spoken with Charles privately about it and will not have any further comment.
  • TNT • In a statement about their NBA coverage and its greatest asset, Charles Barkley, who, despite the DUI and the golf swing, is pretty much the coolest former NBA star ever. He called his producer a five-letter word that starts with a “p” on air, and he gets a slap on the wrist. That rules. • source

Sports: You gotta hand it to Kevin Laue: He can sure play basketball

  • The one-handed Laue now has a Division I scholarship. The 6-foot-10 Laue, who’s begging to have a comeback story made about him for HBO or possibly ESPN, will be playing for Manhattan College next fall. He played at the tough Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia and did well against a bunch of top prospects. Laue, who lost his arm below his elbow during birth, realizes he may have been a tough sell at any school. “It’s a business,” he said. “Their jobs are all on the line. It’s much safer to take a two-handed guy my size that got beat by me.” source

Sports: Congrats to the Bahstin Celtics for blowing it to the Orlando Magic

  • “Every time we got it down to seven or four they made another big shot,” said Doc Rivers. “I mean, they’re a hell of a basketball team, and they played probably their best game.”
  • Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers • Whose team went from force of nature to merely pretty good in the last year. Granted, losing Kevin Garnett to injury didn’t help their cause, but let’s just say we expected better of them. • source
