Offbeat: Techno Jeep: A stroke of musical brilliance in the form of a SUV

  • It takes an insanely creative mind to come up with something this randomly beautiful, and Julian Smith (in the driver’s seat) apparently fits the bill. All the sounds come from the jeep, and you can buy said sounds in ringtone form if you’re interested in having this around everywhere you go. (Thanks to our boy Micah Pearson for the find.) source

Politics: Health care: Al Franken shuts freedom-hating Joe Lieberman down!

  • This is one of those videos that gives us hot flashes. Joe Lieberman, currently looked at as an evil bastard by the left for his blatant about-face on the health-care bill, does not get any love from Sen. Al Franken, who’s totally in “Stuart Saves His Family” hero mode. John McCain has Joe’s back, but you know, this is almost as good as Joe Wilson’s “You Lie” comment for pure entertainment value. We’re gonna let this one stand.
Update: TPM makes a really good point about the shutdown. source

Tech: Bitly.tv is the best video tweeting tool we’ve ever seen. Ever.

bitlytv1217

  • This is officially awesome. Bit.ly, as you might guess, captures tons of data every single time you throw one of your short links into their shortener. Bitly.tv gathers all of the videos linked and tells you about the most popular ones. Why should you care about this? Simple. It’s better than YouTube’s own popular videos tool. Significantly better. We’re impressed. Keep an eye on this site, guys. source

Music: Rage Against the X-Factor Machine: The U.K. Christmas No. 1 race

  • In case you haven’t heard, Rage Against the Machine is in the midst of an amusing battle for the Christmas No. 1 spot in the U.K., a grassroots attempt to have someone other than an X-Factor contestant win the coveted spot. They’re currently winning, and even better, there’s controversy around Rage, after they performed “Killing in the Name” live on the air, unedited, with swear words and all. Best non-story ever. source

Tech: This new Earth-like planet needs a name. We have one idea.

We want to name this planet “Elliott Smith,” because more planets should be named after indie rock stars who we adore. Got any other ideas? Vote here. source

Tech: Dear Fake Steve Jobs: You’re our favorite fake person. Ever.

  • The goal is to have every iPhone user (or as many as we can) turn on a data intensive app and run that app for one solid hour. Send the message to AT&T that we are sick of their substandard network and sick of their abusive comments. The idea is we’ll create a digital flash mob. We’re calling it in Operation Chokehold. Join us and speak truth to power!
  • Fake Steve Jobs” (a.k.a. Daniel Lyons) • On “Operation Chokehold,” his plan to stress test the AT&T network in protest of their awful coverage and attempts to punish iPhone users for their heavy amounts of data usage. You know, instead of improving their network and making their customers happy. The event takes place December 18 at noon Pacific time. We’ll keep you posted on the app they pick. Also, while you’re waiting, give this article a read. It may be the best Fake Steve article ever. source

Culture: The Muppets ring the bells for their “Bohemian” encore

  • Will the Muppets ever get old? No. Which is why this (and the recent “Bohemian Rhapsody” viral hit which had everyone and their mother talking) make us happy. Whoever decided to make the Muppets into viral sensations after years of neglect deserves a cookie and a pat on the head – this is the perfect format for their awesomeness.
