Culture: Reality TV show pitch: “Let’s throw Levi Johnston in an RV!”

  • Levi Johnston wants to extend his fifteen minutes. The Bristol Palin baby daddy has his sights set on doing a reality TV show, he’s pitching it as an “Alaskan Entourage.” Less Jeremy Piven, more hunting and chillin’ with the boys. And he’s shopping it around in … tah dah! An RV! We couldn’t write a post this clever. source

Offbeat: Stupid robber calls ahead, gives bank time to prepare for arrest

  • I’ve heard of drive-up robberies where they rob the bank via drive-up windows. But I’ve never had somebody call ahead and say, ‘Get the money, we’re coming.’
  • Fairfield, Connecticut, Police Department Det. Lt. Michael Gagner • Regarding one of the stupidest bank robbers ever. Yesterday afternoon, the People’s Bank of Fairfield got a call demanding $100,000 or threatening a bloodbath. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize that they gave the bank ample time to call the police. Albert Bailey and a juvenile have been charged in the robbery. source

Tech: The word of Steve Jobs: E-mails come down like commandments

  • Over the last few weeks, Steve Jobs has been sending e-mails to random human beings left and right about Apple issues big and small. It’s bizarre and fascinating because his company is so secretive, and in the case of the “no,” it actually breaks big news (the guy who sent that was asking if he could tether his iPhone to his iPad, something which hadn’t been disclosed). “Almost every Mac Web site had picked it up,” said Jezper Söderlund, the music producer who asked the question, “and the biggest newspaper in town wrote about it. We had more visits to my Web site in 12 hours than we had all year. It was crazy.” Dear Steve: Do you like our blog? We hope you do. Your company makes good computers. Sincerely, Julius. source

Politics: Mimes know how to deal with xenophobes at immigration rallies

  • Whoever came up with this way of handling dissenting opinion (making Roy Beck of anti-immigration group NumbersUSA basically freak out in this clip due to all the balloons and noisemakers) deserves a gold star and a cookie. If the tea partiers did this instead of getting all angry and stuff, Sarah Palin would probably be president right now. source

Politics: Joe Biden is f(#@ing right, isn’t he? Yeah, he really is.

  • And yes Mr. Vice President,
    you’re right …
  • White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs • On handling a major political gaffe with a little bit of levity. Joe Biden told Obama that signing the health care bill was a “big ducking deal.” Except he wasn’t ducking. The video is here. We have to say, Joe Biden amuses the spit out of us. source

Offbeat: He didn’t Lego: Dude builds career in high art, brick by brick

Of all the things you can build an art career out of, Legos seem fairly unlikely. But don’t tell that to Nathan Sawaya, who’s finding success with the blocks. source

Politics: “Conservative Libertarian: Two great tastes that taste great together”

  • “What if you drew arrows from here to theocracy?” Oh man, Jon Stewart was in fine form last night, pulling out that Glenn Beck impression of his and making it even better than it was before. Beck is still crazy but occasionally says sensical things these days. This clip is 13 minutes, but it’s the best 13 minutes you’ll spend all day. source

Offbeat: Hipster doesn’t buy Hot Pockets with his food stamps, feels heat

  • What makes them less deserving of assistance when they need it than anyone else who qualifies, and why is it such a travesty that food stamp recipients have access to quality, healthy food?
  • Gerry Mak • One of the main subjects in a Salon story titled “Hipsters on Food Stamps,” which is officially our band’s new name. He got heavily criticized because he’s a broke arty kid who doesn’t have many job prospects, lives in Baltimore (where unemployment is very high), and uses his food stamp money to buy rabbits to cook and eat, along with other foodie-type foods not generally associated with food stamps. Mak suggests the negative response to the story “reflects the larger race and class conflicts in this country – the underlying sentiment behind many people’s hatred toward artists is that art is purely the domain of the wealthy and the privileged.” Ah, hipsters. We’re gonna drink a Dale’s Pale Ale in Mak’s honor. source

Culture: South Park slams a nine-iron into the Tiger Woods story

  • Oh, South Park, we missed you so. Last night’s episode tackled everyone’s favorite punching bag, the Tiger Woods saga, with clever bits such as this one, where Cartman and Stan play a Tiger-themed fighting game. We want to buy this game. source
