U.S.: Texas food stamp tragedy: Awful in more ways than one

  • tragic On Monday, a mother in Texas shot her two children before killing herself. She died at the scene of the shooting. The children later died in the hospital — the daughter on Wednesday, the son Thursday. Just two hours before the shooting, daughter Ramie Grimmer updated her Facebook status to say: “may die 2day.”
  • more tragic Rachelle Grimmer killed her children in a food stamp office, after being denied food stamps on multiple occasions. She had been trying to apply since July but had been unable to do so, due to paperwork issues. The family was extremely poor and had been visited by Child Protective Services twice over neglect issues. source

Politics: In this post, we call Newt Gingrich’s bluff on food stamps

  • What I said is factually true. And to hide behind the charge of racism? I have never said anything about President Obama which is racist.
  • 2012 presidential candidate Newt Gingrich • Defending himself from charges of racism after he referred to Obama as the “Food Stamp President.” Gingrich claimed is was “factually true” because one in six Americans receive them. OK, Newt, we checked your numbers and you’re right — over 44 million people out of roughly 307 million received food stamps in February 2011, a record level that’s jumped by nearly 20 million since 2008. (Though we’ll add this much: The number is closer to one in seven, brah.) But the problem is tone, Newt. By calling a president a “Food Stamp President,” you make an attack that sounds less like a reasonable criticism and more like a broadside: Would you have said this about Clinton? Or Bush? Exactly. source

Offbeat: Hipster doesn’t buy Hot Pockets with his food stamps, feels heat

  • What makes them less deserving of assistance when they need it than anyone else who qualifies, and why is it such a travesty that food stamp recipients have access to quality, healthy food?
  • Gerry Mak • One of the main subjects in a Salon story titled “Hipsters on Food Stamps,” which is officially our band’s new name. He got heavily criticized because he’s a broke arty kid who doesn’t have many job prospects, lives in Baltimore (where unemployment is very high), and uses his food stamp money to buy rabbits to cook and eat, along with other foodie-type foods not generally associated with food stamps. Mak suggests the negative response to the story “reflects the larger race and class conflicts in this country – the underlying sentiment behind many people’s hatred toward artists is that art is purely the domain of the wealthy and the privileged.” Ah, hipsters. We’re gonna drink a Dale’s Pale Ale in Mak’s honor. source
