Culture: Did an anti-gay-marriage answer derail a Miss USA win? Probably.

  • A lot of people were shocked.
We were all kind of giving each other those eyes, we couldn’t believe it.
  • Miss Vermont Brooke Werner • On Miss California, Carrie Prejean’s, controversial answer to Perez Hilton’s question regarding gay marriage. Hilton, who is openly gay and famous for outing gay celebs, made it clear that he gave Prejean a low score based on her answer, and based on the way the pageant is tabulated, that might have cost her the competition. By the way, it was clear the question was in the mix, but it was pure chance that Hilton asked it and Prejean answered it. • source

Culture, Tech: We’re pulling for you, Stephen Hawking! :(

  • I have been lucky, that my condition has progressed more slowly than is often the case. But it shows that one need not lose hope.
  • Stephen Hawking • In a quote on his Web site. The 67-year-old scientist and writer, famous for his brilliance despite being crippled by Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is in a hospital and said to be “very ill.” Fingers crossed, man. Hope you pull through. • source

Culture, World: A “Slumdog” child actress + the British press = Sketchiness

  • “My daughter is not for sale.” You mean he had to clarify? Rafiq Qureshi, father of “Slumdog Millionaire” child actress Rubina Ali, denies reports that he demanded money to sell his now-famous daughter. British rag News of the World (who broke the Michael Phelps pot scandal) apparently tried to trick him into selling his daughter, under the guise that he was talking to a wealthy Arab couple looking to adopt, not some douchebag with zero ethics working as an intern for News of the World. He said he was trapped into a tempting situation but never once tried to sell her. You suck, News of the World. source

Culture: Evidence MTV is attempting to give up its vapid ways

  • “The Buried Life,” with its “100 things I want to do before I die” conceit, will often do charitable things to help deserving people on the path to hijinks. source
  • “T.I.’s Road to Redemption” features everyone’s favorite jailbound rapper trying to help young people not make the same stupid mistakes. source
  • Nick Lachey, star of the extra-vapid “Newlyweds” with ex-wife Jessica Simpson, helps out performing arts kids in his hometown on “Taking the Stage.” source
  • Hold up – why isn’t one of these “MTV plays music videos again”? Because then we’d care. This just feels like another stop on the road to irrelevance. source

Culture: Madonna fell off a horse again. And no, it wasn’t her high horse.

  • The Material Girl also fell off a horse in 2005. Between the Kabbalah, the adoptions, the sex books and the lengthy pop career, Madonna has a pretty interesting life. But we bet you didn’t know Madonna rode horses, too. And she tends to fall off of them, too. In 2005, the pop singer broke a bunch of bones when she fell off one at her birthday party. She didn’t hurt herself that badly this time, just bumps and bruises, but isn’t it weird that she was on a freakin’ horse in the first place? source
