Culture, Tech: Oprah and mikeyy: Two people Twitter users hate, apparently

  • Oprah’s a tweeter! Oprah, as promised, covered Twitter on her show today, giving the site the same sort of mainstream recognition that Jonathan Franzen didn’t want a while back. Some Twitter users apparently don’t want it either; one of the the trending topics today is #unfollowfriday, a reaction to Oprah, Ashton Kutcher and other celebrity tweeters diehards think are overexposing the service. source

  • Mikeyy says “hayyyyyyy” Mikeyy, the Twitter worm that’s been spreading around for the last week, started populating Twitter in another set of mutations, this time welcoming Oprah to the service, trashing Soulja Boy, hitting on Ellen DeGeneres and overall just being a pain in the butt. Mikeyy doesn’t harm your computer, he just annoys you and all your friends because he thinks it’s funny. source

Culture, Tech: YouTube has TV shows now, guys, but they’re mostly ancient

  • From cheeseball comedy (“The Beverly Hillbillies”) to westerns (“Bonanza”) and sci-fi (“Star Trek”), this decade is best represented. source
  • The lineup of ’70s shows clearly pulls from the action/crime wing of TV – “Charlie’s Angels,” “Starksky & Hutch” and “S.W.A.T.” source
  • “MacGyver” and “Married With Children” headline the selection of ’80s shows, unless you consider “T.J. Hooker” a highlight of ’80s television. source
  • Fox dramas “Party of Five” and “Beverly Hills 90210” lead the lineup, but Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert fans should hit up “The Dana Carvey Show.” source
  • The pickings are pretty slim here – recent episodes of “Guiding Light,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Jericho” and new show “Harper’s Island.” source

Culture, Tech: Today’s a really big day for Twitter’s popular consciousness

  • Kutcher’s role as celebrity ambassador for Twitter only starts there, as he’ll be on Oprah today talking about the feat. Will Oprah have a book club effect on Twitter? God, we hope not.

Culture: That “Britain’s Got Talent” singer, Susan Boyle, is thinking big

  • Whatever comes my way, I am ready. It would be lovely to sing for the queen. There would be less of the carry on from me, and more of the singing.
  • Susan Boyle • The 47-year-old singer who wowed judges on “Britain’s Got Talent,” on how she hopes to capitalize on her newfound fame. May we suggest makeover? You’re famous now, and you totally deserve it. • source

Culture, Music: Ben Folds gives into the a cappella craze a little too much

  • Music education has been atrophying. And yet, at any given school, any number of a cappella groups are getting together a few times a week to rehearse and perform. What’s more is they’re really good.
  • Ben Folds • Who will be releasing an album of a cappella groups from around the nation singing his songs, “University A Cappella.” No offense, Ben, but do we really want to encourage this trend? • source

Culture: Well, that was quick: A book on Bo, the Obama dog, is coming

  • Bo’s thoughts on the novel? “Woof.” It must run in the family; Bo won’t be the first Obama with its own book, but “America’s Commander in Leash,” as indie publisher Mascot Books titled said book, will have a kid’s book by the end of the month. Quick advice to Mascot Books: It’s April 16 already. You’re shipping by April 30. You might want to proofread really well. source

Culture, Tech: Ashton Kutcher apparently spends all his time on Twitter

  • Breaking 900k feels like a marathon runner entering Olympic stadium. However my @replys are becoming difficult to track.
  • Ashton Kutcher • On breaking 900,000 freaking followers. He challenged CNN to a ego-waving contest to see who can get to a million followers first. We hope neither of them win. • source

Culture: Rod Blagojevich has fallen to the depths of celebrity reality TV. LOL.

  • Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has agreed to be on the next season of “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” which is just hi-larious. The impeached ex-pol stands to make $80,000 a week on the show, but at the cost of any shame or personal integrity he had left. source
  • Unfortunately, there may be one thing standing in the way of him making bank on his notoriety. The show tapes in Costa Rica, and he needs to convince the judge presiding over his corruption trial to loosen travel restrictions. For the love of God, judge, please say yes! Pretty please? source

Culture: Death comes in threes. Here’s three people who died recently.

  • Marilyn Chambers, who you either know from old-school boxes of Ivory Snow or from your dad’s old-school porn collection.
  • Harry Kalas, whose voice you either know because you’re a Phillies fan or you watch classic NFL documentaries on television.
