Politics: Max Headroom: New Jersey governor Chris Christie likes cutting stuff

  • Repudiate this The thing about this clip that’s entertaining is not the subject matter, which involves Eric Cantor denouncing a candidate for Congress with an unfortunate interest in Naziism. It’s entertaining because Cantor used “repudiate” correctly. Take notes, Sarah.
  • Pissed-off in Philly Obama spent his sunday in Philadelphia stumping, specifically for Joe Sestak, that guy who knocked Arlen Specter out of the Senate. During his speech, Obama made a blatant rip on the GOP’s fiscal policies, clearly blaming them for the economic crisis.
  • Explaining Chris ChristieIn case you’re wondering why the New Jersey governor decided to cancel a huge public works project (which, after much complaining, he’s reconsidering), this anecdote explains it. This guy is fiscal conservatism to the core, and he’s not afraid to use his clout.

Tech: Sparrow = Dead simple e-mail, and surprisingly, a lot of hype

  • Here’s something that’s never been tried before: Minimalism. In an e-mail client. In an attempt to simplify what may perhaps be one of the most overly-cluttered parts of our daily life, new mail client Sparrow wants you to use e-mail the way that you use Twitter. Crazy idea, but the beta version of this app got 20,000 downloads in a day – really high for a new OSX program. Talk about attention. source

Offbeat: Show-off: 22-year-old ex-poker player makes our life seem boring

  • I knew that I should stay in school, but in the back of my mind I was thinking, ‘This is so easy, why wouldn’t I just do this?’
  • 22-year-old University of Maryland student Steven Silverman • Discussing his life as a high-stakes poker player, a lifestyle he’s since left behind. Silverman quit college to pursue the dream, and in the process won millions of dollars. He also lost a lot of money, too. He was robbed at gunpoint during a poker match. He even put in time on a reality TV show. But, after getting stressed out on the poker scene, he ended up going back to school and “retiring” from the poker scene. Dude has managed to live a lifetime in just a couple of years. source

Culture: CBS is totally kicking TV ratings butt this season. Here’s why

  • Big-Tent broad appeal Rather than going for the lucrative 18-49 advertising demo, CBS makes an effort to hit everyone. This season, they’re leading every demographic – including 18-49 – and they’re doing better than usual with younger viewers.
  • basic, not basic cable Instead of trying to hone on on specific, profitable demographics on cable, they’ve stuck with their bread and butter. Sure, CBS owns Showtime, but they don’t have a bunch of basic cable niche channels like the other networks do.
  • Building up, bit by bit CBS adds bits and pieces to their programming repertoire year after year that together create a well-oiled machine. And most of it works. (Well, barring “*#@! My Dad Says,” which has decent ratings but awful reviews.) source

Tech: Do Apple’s iPhone 4 design flaws extend to the glass?

  • So yeah, another iPhone mini-crisis: So, these cases are designed to protect your iPhone from the elements, but they may actually have the opposite effect. Why? Well, if through normal use, something gets under the case, as has been known to happen, it could cause scratches to the case. Bad enough, but factor in the iPhone 4’s glass back, and you have possible breakage. They reportedly had to take a bunch of cases out of the Apple Store as a preemptive measure. Jesus, can Apple get a break here? source

  • 500,000 more gallons of sludge could be on the way if a wall breaks; what’s the Hungarian word for “f**k”? source

U.S.: 8 of 9 “despicable,” “cowardly” NYC hate crime suspects arrested

  • These suspects deployed terrible, wolf-pack odds of nine against one, which revealed them as predators whose crimes were as cowardly as they were despicable.
  • NYC Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly • Regarding the recent hate crime allegedly committed by nine gang members against three gay men in three separate attacks last weekend. We won’t go into all of the details of the brutal attack, but we’ll note that it’s bad enough that the suspects allegedly went out of their way to clean up the crime scene – painting walls, removing carpet and even dumping bleach down the drains. Honestly, that speaks volumes of how bad it was. Yikes. Eight of the nine suspects have already been apprehended in a crime mayor Michael Bloomberg says “sickened” him. He hopes their speedy arrests will let others know that people who commit hate crimes in the city “will go to jail for a very long time.” source

World: Can you guess where this protest pic was taken? (And why?)

Hint: It’s in an Eastern European country. And they’re protesting for reasons that would be considered hate speech in the U.S. – that enough? OK, click the link! Go! source
