U.S.: Leader of fringe Amish sect charged with hate crime over beard-cutting

  • In doing so [punishing departing members], the defendants forcibly restrained multiple Amish men and cut off their beards and head hair with scissors and battery-powered clippers, causing bodily injury to these men while also injuring others who attempted to stop the attacks. In the Amish religion, a man’s beard and head hair are sacred.
  • The U.S. Justice Department • Detailing the charges against Samuel Mullet Sr., the leader of a breakaway Amish sect which many have called a cult, though Mullet himself (perhaps predictably) doesn’t agree. The details of his deeds go somewhat beyond these grisly forced haircuts — he’s also alleged to have locked members in a chicken coop for days at a time, beaten people “who appear to disobey him,” and most salaciously, had sex with married women as a means to cleanse them of the devil. When asked by CNN last month if he had orchestrated the forcible shearings, his replied thusly: “Beard cutting is a crime, is it?” Due to the allegations involving a physical violation with a religious motivation, this would fall under the Matthew Shepard-James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act, meaning that if convicted Mullet and six of his cohorts could face life in prison. source

U.S.: Man involved in infamous James Byrd Jr. hate crime executed

  • Hopefully, today’s execution of Brewer can remind all of us that racial hatred and prejudice leads to terrible consequence for the victim, the victim’s family, for the perpetrator and for the perpetrator’s family.
  • Clara Taylor, the sister of James Byrd, Jr. • Speaking of the execution of Lawrence Russell Brewer, one of the men responsible for the infamous hate crime that took her brother’s life. “We’re making progress,” she said. “I know he was guilty so I have no qualms about the death penalty.” This is in contrast to Taylor’s nephew, Ross Byrd, who felt it wasn’t the right move prior to the execution. Brewer was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m. local time — or 7:21 EDT. His final words: “No. I have no final statement.” source

U.S.: Death penalty: One of James Byrd Jr.’s killers will be executed tonight

  • With all the hubbub over Troy Davis’ probable execution, there’s another death penatly case that’s about to hit a head tonight, and this one was probably far more notorious at the time. In 1998, James Byrd, Jr. (right), was murdered in one of the worst hate crimes in modern times — dragged behind a pickup truck that was moving at full-speed. Lawrence Russell Brewer, left, is an avowed white supremacist and one of two men on death row for the attack. Brewer is scheduled to die tonight, but Byrd’s own son doesn’t want that. “You can’t fight murder with murder,” Ross Byrd said about the case. “Life in prison would have been fine. I know he can’t hurt my daddy anymore. I wish the state would take in mind that this isn’t what we want.” The execution is set for 6 p.m. local time tonight. source

U.S.: 8 of 9 “despicable,” “cowardly” NYC hate crime suspects arrested

  • These suspects deployed terrible, wolf-pack odds of nine against one, which revealed them as predators whose crimes were as cowardly as they were despicable.
  • NYC Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly • Regarding the recent hate crime allegedly committed by nine gang members against three gay men in three separate attacks last weekend. We won’t go into all of the details of the brutal attack, but we’ll note that it’s bad enough that the suspects allegedly went out of their way to clean up the crime scene – painting walls, removing carpet and even dumping bleach down the drains. Honestly, that speaks volumes of how bad it was. Yikes. Eight of the nine suspects have already been apprehended in a crime mayor Michael Bloomberg says “sickened” him. He hopes their speedy arrests will let others know that people who commit hate crimes in the city “will go to jail for a very long time.” source

U.S.: Obama signs a hate-crimes bill eleven years in the making

  • Through this law, we will strengthen the protections against crimes based on the color of your skin, the faith in your heart, or the place of your birth. We will finally add federal protections against crimes based on gender, disability, gender identity or sexual orientation.
  • President Barack Obama • On signing a hate-crimes bill that, for the first time, protects people based on their sexual orientation. The bill is something that’s been fought for since the dragging death of James Byrd, Jr. (who was black) and beating death of Matthew Shepard (who was gay) shined light on the issue in 1998. Critics of the bill say it just adds further regulations to a highly-regulated process. • source
