Tech: Gizmodo says that iPhone lost in a bar isn’t fake, but actually real

  • The phone was remotely killed. The Daring Fireball dude says he called around and believes Apple lost a prototype. iTunes recognizes it as an iPhone. It uses MicroSIM, which no phones use (but the iPad 3G does). Most importantly, the guts of the phone are all labeled “Apple.” Holy crap. This is major. This may be the biggest leak to ever get out of Apple. source

Politics: Does the internet create political polarization? A new study says no

  • perception The internet is making it easier for people to focus only on the extreme opinions they want to hear, either left or right. This creates strong political polarization.
  • reality As a new study notes, “Extreme sites are more common than extreme readers.” And strongly ideological readers read a little bit of everything online. source

World: Iceland to Europe: We swear, we don’t mean to cause drama

  • It seems we’re getting pretty good at exporting our disasters. I think people might get funny ideas about Iceland. … We’re not to blame for an eruption.
  • Icelandic political commentator Egill Helgason • Regarding the country nicked by multiple crises in the last couple of years – crises that have hit Europe as hard as the tiny island. The country, however, has reason to feel a bit of relief about the volcano. Despite its continent-grounding air drama, the country itself isn’t affected by it too much. Flights are even getting out of the capital, no problem. Maybe we should hate Iceland. source

Politics: Max Headroom: Geraldo’s unlikely lifeline? Mike Huckabee

  • Geraldo nearly killed Bizarro Hippie Express chairman Mark Williams was on Fox News’ “Geraldo at Large” talking about extremism in the movement, except in reality, he was on the air to rail on Geraldo Rivera (he even calls him out for his yellow journalism!). Mike Huckabee looks like an unfortunate bystander to this trainwreck.

  • Clinton on extremism Earlier this weekend, Bill Clinton said some stuff about extremism that suggested another Timothy McVeigh could come out of the bizarro hippie movement. It drew a lot of scorn from the right. This clarification during ABC’s “This Week” makes his position sound entirely reasonable.
  • colbert on fact-checking We love this clip for three reasons: First, it name-checks journalism smart guy Jay Rosen (one of our smart people we love reading on our iPad); second, it makes a reasonable suggestion for fact-checking Sunday shows; and third, it holds David Gregory’s feet to the fire for not doing so.

Tech, World: Norway’s Prime Minister currently running country with an iPad

  • We want a leader this awesome. While some countries like Israel act like the iPad is the next coming of the black plague, Norway Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg (who’s been stuck in New York City because of the volcano and the airline kerfluffle it’s created) has been using one to RUN A FREAKING COUNTRY. We’d like to see Obama do this. source

Tech: Apple’s iPad not passing the test at a couple of big schools

  • GWU The university says its wireless network’s security features don’t play nice with the iPad. We’ve been on George Washington’s campus, and we’re pretty sure it’s because their wireless network sucks.
  • Princeton The Ivy League school has blocked some of the devices on their network due to DHCP issues with the device – something a reader of ours mentioned last week. It, however, is working on a fix. source
