U.S.: Teenagers learn that that killer party wasn’t really worth it

  • There was blood, urine, food, all over the floors. I’ve never seen anything like it in my career.
  • East Bridgewater, Mass. Police Detective Michael Jenkins • Regarding the killer party that some punk kids threw while another kid’s parents were on vacation in Paris. They caused $45,000 in damages, got arrested, and somehow managed to top this shirtless Australian pro. From the sound of the story, this situation was a nightmare – laptops were stolen, cars were damaged, mattresses were urinated on, and walls were severely damaged. Or in other words, just another average Saturday night for the 14,000 residents of sleepy East Bridgewater, Mass. Kegger next week! source

Politics: Eric Cantor’s attack on Democrats feels kinda tasteless

  • When Eric Cantor gets up in the morning, does he get out of a pod? Is he covered in slime? Because, seriously, he sounds very slimy in this clip, where he suggests Democrats are trying to leverage attacks on them for political gain. Mr. Cantor, where did anyone suggest that a GOP leader led to these attacks? The bullet that Cantor’s referring to, by the way, appears to be a stray bullet shot into the air, according to the Richmond, Va. police department. source

Offbeat: Stupid robber calls ahead, gives bank time to prepare for arrest

  • I’ve heard of drive-up robberies where they rob the bank via drive-up windows. But I’ve never had somebody call ahead and say, ‘Get the money, we’re coming.’
  • Fairfield, Connecticut, Police Department Det. Lt. Michael Gagner • Regarding one of the stupidest bank robbers ever. Yesterday afternoon, the People’s Bank of Fairfield got a call demanding $100,000 or threatening a bloodbath. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize that they gave the bank ample time to call the police. Albert Bailey and a juvenile have been charged in the robbery. source

Culture: Octet Mom Nadya Suleman paid $5,000 for PETA sign

  • Hey, when you’re broke and desperate, these things start to seem like good ideas. Nadya Suleman, a.k.a. Octomom, is about to lose her house due to a pending mortgage bill. While PETA’s $5,000 is only a drop in the bucket (the family owes hundreds of thousands of dollars), it’s a very helpful one, because it also includes free veggie food for her family. Here’s something we don’t say often: PETA wins. source

Tech: One more and it’s a trend: GoDaddy pulls out of China, too

  • They claimed it was the result of restrictive new rules. GoDaddy, a domain-registration service, is one of those services that’s so broadly used that it’s hard to imagine an Internet without it. But China’s gonna get the chance, after GoDaddy balked at new rules for registering .cn domains, including color photos of those registering. As a result, they will no longer register new domains. Crazy. source

Culture: Professor: Facebook causes syphilis. Facebook: Crazy claims do.

  • Today’s reports exaggerate the comments made by the professor, and ignore the difference between correlation and causation.
  • A spokesperson for Facebook • Regarding the insane claims that a rise in the service’s popularity increased the spread of syphilis in a handful of British cities. “Social networking sites are making it easier for people to meet up for casual sex,” said Prof. Peter Kelly, who pushed forward the theory. Careful, or you might get it the STD from these guys. source

Tech: Content-aware fill in Photoshop is like whoa

  • We’re pretty sure this new feature in the latest Photoshop is totally real (and not an April Fools’ joke like some have suggested), but man, is it ethically questionable. Worth1000 and Fark might enjoy it, along with a few ad firms, but for editorial photos, it’s like a minefield. Skip to about the 2:50 mark to see the dude remove an entire TREE.
