Culture: In case you’re wondering, we’re boycotting the Olympics on SFB.

  • Why? Because they’re boring and mind-numbing. Nothing against Shaun White, Lindsey Vonn and all the other star athletes, but we have no desire to watch or cover the Winter Olympics. (We’re slightly friendlier to the Summer Olympics, in the same way a pit bull is slightly friendlier than a lion.) Part of this is that the Olympics are boring in every way, shape and form. Part of this is because Dick Ebersol is a jerk and we don’t want to support his work. But let’s put it this way – if you’re wondering why we haven’t covered the Winter Olympic games in Vancouver, it’s because we don’t care. Thanks for listening.

Tech: Windows Phone 7 Series a complete reboot from the top down

  • Former Nike designers gave Windows Phone 7 Series (that’s a mouthful) a visual reboot that focuses on simplicity over noise (as well as a consistent experience), and the result looks a lot like the Zune HD. Early reviews are super-positive; Engadget says that the OS “looks nothing like anything else on the market, and we think that’s to its advantage.” source

U.S., World: Hillary Clinton has a prediction on what happens to Iran next

  • That is how we see it. We see that the government in Iran, the supreme leader, the president, the Parliament, is being supplanted and that Iran is moving towards a military dictatorship.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • Speaking at a televised town hall meeting at Carnegie Mellon University. She’s literally suggesting that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps could take power away from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and company based on the intelligence they have. She also notes that UN sanctions would focus on the guards, which control Iran’s nuclear program. Interesting take. source

World: Sound familiar? Ireland’s Catholic Church rocked by a sex-abuse scandal

  • Yes, storms spark fear, even those that rock the boat of the church because of the sins of its members.
  • Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone • Discussing sexual-abuse scandals that have rocked the Catholic Church of Ireland. A November report noted that the church “obsessively” hid child abuse between the years of 1975 and 2004. Four bishops have already resigned as a result of the scandal, where at least one priest admitted to abusing as many as 100 children. Yikes. source
